Hi, I'm 2 weeks post op bypass. 23 yrs old and I'm absolutely knackered! I knew I would be tired after the op but I an so tired I am worried. I am really struggling with it and it's getting me down. I can sleep 10 hrs on a night and just want to turn over and sleep when I wake up. I'm napping during the day for at least 2 hrs and by the time bedtime comes I'm shattered. Did anyone else suffer like this? How long did it last for? Any tips on how to make it better? Help!!

Thanks! Xx

I am 4 weeks post-op, and I feel the same.

I seem to have a problem falling asleep, but once I am asleep I can sleep for 10 to 12 hours and still not want to get up. I am hoping that when I start exercise I will feel better and more energetic.

I think this is probably normal. It's a big operation and your hardly eating anything to give you energy. I'm 6 weeks post-op and I was wiped out for a couple of weeks. That being said, I have a one and two year old - so sleeping still wasn't an option for me lol. I feel great now ....

I am green with envy at your 10 -12 hours sleep :D

Speak to your health professionals if you're really worried ... but give your body a break, it's in recovery :)

Good luck with your journey. :)

I was the same for the first few weeks I kept thinking I was great, go to the shops come back shattered and had to sleep and I dont mean lie on the sofa a proper get in bed pull duvet up and sleep!
In the last 3 weeks or so im up for longer have more energy and sleep when its bed time once in a while will have a lay down and listen to the radio so things getting better
and it will for you too

Thanks for the replies! It's reassuring to know it's not just me lol fingers crossed i start feeling better soon hopefully when I'm past puree I will pick up a bit more.

I think having just 5 small incisions u think ahh its nothing u have to really think about what's gone on inside and the healing ur body is doing ☺ xx

My energy levels didn't pick up properly until week 10. Still get tired now and I'm 16 weeks out

I actually now class sleeping as a hobby lol x

Oh dear! I was carrying a 6 pack of water around Asda yesterday only the 330ml bottles too and my arms were aching! I feel like a right weakling! Didn't expect to be feeling like that lol
Do you work? If so when did you return? X

My energy levels are just picking up but it's been a nightmare since my op 4weeks ago.i was told cos of the anaesthetic we had it can take upto 6 months for some for it to leave their system.you are going through what most have gone through hang in there,it'll pass.

I found the weakness feeling stopped at around 12 weeks post op. The tiredness is still ongoing - but has eased off.

My team also told me anaesthetic can take between 6-12 months to fully leave your system, which is why they do not recommend other surgeries within a year.

I returned to work (full-time) after 6 weeks, but needed reduced hours until week 12... To be honest I could have done with 8-10 weeks off, but financially I needed to come back. It takes me 45 mins to drive to work and an hour and a half on the way home (London traffic) so that adds to my tiredness I think.

xx

I can understand the drive making you tired it is a lot of concentration and its surprising how much energy it takes from you. Luckily my work is only 5 mins drive away.

Thanks for your comments they have been really helpful and definitely gave me some things to think about.

I'm still tired after 6.5 months but am now doing a full day and commute but come the weekend I am a sleeping beauty!

The first couple of months were really hard for me and I was totally wiped out. I couldn't handle being holed up in London so I went and slept in the sun in Mallorca with my mum for a few days which really broke it up!

I know it's hard but if you can try and give yourself a little thing to do each day to get out the house and moving e.g walk to a local coffee shop and get a coffee (not that you'll be able to drink much!), go to the news agents and pick up a newspaper, go for a walk around the block, feed the ducks at the local pond etc... these little bits of movement will help with regaining energy and will give you a sense of purpose even if you only manage 20 minutes out and about.

As soon as you are on puree foods start nailing the protein - the more protein you eat the less your muscles will waste away and the more strength you'll have. Even though I get around 90 grams of protein a day I've lost muscle and it's a real pain to get back once it's gone! I'm a weakling at the gym...

I'd also say, supplements are key and as soon as you're allowed to take capsules/tablets make sure you get a really good quality multi vitamin pill and if you want to beef it up a bit throw in some Ferroglobin B12 capsules - these are really high in B12 and Iron and with the help of one of these daily I am no longer anaemic and have avoided having to have B12 injections to top me up. You can get them at Boots.

Hope you feel a little more energetic soon but for now listen to your body and sleep, it's good weather for hibernating and OMG that new TV channel ITV Be is wonderful for mindless zoning out! X

Hi

I’m 5 weeks post op now and feel exactly the same, I have no energy and I’m so tired & weak.

I’ve read through some posts on here and one of the opinions is to get more protein!

Hello biker babes
Well done on becoming a post opper! It's only been a few weeks post op your insides have been re plumped and is kind of in shock and I think been tired is a way of of the body recovering but getting some protein in is not a bad idea I'm guessing at this stage youreating very little
It does get better everyone recovers at different speeds just don't run before you can walk!
All the very best
