I'm 7 days post op and feeling crap

I had gastric bypass surgery last Sunday and I'm still feeling crap. The fluids are so hard to swallow and the protein drink is that unbearable that I'm holding my nose - when will I start to feel better?

I lost 16lb before the op on the liver shrinking diet which I put back on whilst in hospital for 3 days, I have since lost 12lb of it but surely after not eating for 7 days shouldn't it all have come off.

I'm really looking forward to eating normal food, I'm going away in 4 weeks and I'm getting worried trying to think what I will be able to eat, Any suggestions on food that I can eat that doesn't need liquidising?

I was in hospital with Bonita and Topsy but never exchanged phone no's - wish I had they were so inspiring. Anyway enough moaning from me cause after all this is what I wanted and what so many other people want, I just want to start losing and feeling better:bliss:

Thanks to all who gave me advice on my previous thread

Speak soon :wave_cry:

Hi there

Sorry you are not feeling great right now...

I can't help you as I'm a bypass virgin....lol...(Hushhhhh....You know, not been bypassed yet).

But I reckon you are retaining a lot of fluid...I don't think you should be worried about eating stuff in 4 weeks...just concentrate on now.

Even pre bypass any diet will kick start the metabolism by 'eating'...so maybe it's same with bypassers too.

I hope you feel better soon...as I'm sure you will do...all the best

~hugs~

Congratulations on your Op, I am so pleased it all went well for you.
You will feel crappy for a couple of weeks as your still healing inside and it takes a while, It does get easier each day, 12 lbs is a good loss so don't be disheartened. Take it easy and relax, the weight will just dropp off you now.

Hi hun, glad your surgery went well. It sounds like you have a bit of the post-op blues which is completely normal. It also is normal to have fluid retention for 10 days or so post-op, I did and I felt bigger after my surgery which was hard to deal with. Your body is still in a bit of 'shock' from the trauma of surgery. It gets better, promise! Not sure what your food instructions were but as soon as you can go on purees you will feel a bit more energy and more normal. The body needs time so just baby yourself and know that the weight will come off. Good job on getting the protein in, the stuff they give you from the hospital I have heard really sucks but you do need the nutrition. When you are able you should look into a tastier supplement so you don't hate it so much. Keep drinking & eating as much as you can, it will help you heal faster and feel better.

Hi Anez. I'm sorry to hear your still feeling a bit crap. It will get easier I promise.

With regards to the weight, give it another week or so and you'll be amazed, remember you were having five litres of fluid in that drip which is the reason you put the weight back on, that will soon shift out of your system chuck.

Try freezing that Fortimel into lolly's that does help a bit, but I'm like you and can't stand the stuff either. You can always give Anna a quick ring for some advice if your really struggling.

Please don't overdo it, you will start to feel better soon, I did wonder whether you were up and about too soon so please get some rest. Have you heard from Gail? I know Lesley has been a bit rough too, but I'm sure her super sense of humour will pull her through.

(((Hugs)))
Bonita.

Sorry to hear you're feeling poop, but i'm sure you will soon start to feel a lot better hun xx:D

Nic you've said all I would have said.

Don't worry chick, you will begin to feel better. You are still healing inside, and so it takes time for the swelling to reduce. You will find it easier to take in fluids and food as the days go by. Don't rush, just take in what you can. Do try to sip, sip, sip fluids so you don't dehydrate. x x

Nezzy It is normal to bloat up and put weight on during the saty in hospital I put on half a stone but it does come of just as quick if you cant stomach the foritmel drinks try slimfast shakes I did and these worked well for me. I had a bad emotional days 3-4 days after surgery and I was so tearful and regreting it but that lasted acouple of days and I put it down to post op blues. I haven't looked back since then and it is so worth all the pain and the crap. You will get there and then you will start to enjoy your new life. Just keep sipping away at your fluids and you'll feel better in no time xXx

Hello again Bonita
I'm afraid I never got anyone's contact details and I'm afraid that I might never get to speak to Gail again, it's such a shame as we got on so well, as for Leslie she said she would forward her number on to me in a personal message which I'm sure she will when feeling a bit better. I was so glad to hear that you were out and sounding positive as usual. Take care and will speak again soon xxxxx

Nezzy you are doing really well. You probably are still pumped up with the gas they put inside during the op. Take care of yourself and don't rush things just think that 12 lbs will never go on again.

nez you will do it remember small baby steps and next year we will paint ever town with fairy dust - miss you loads too xx

Hey Nezzie

Hang in there - the first week is the worst week!

This is a list of what I drank on the fluid fortnight for inspiration
Milkshake made with skimmed milk - fresh banana and fresh strawberries - blended - slides down a treat and tastes yum
Slimfast shakes - have to admit I got sick of these rather fast
Heinz cream of tomato soup, cream of chicken (sieve out the chicken bits)
Other soups from the supermarket which I blended to make completely smooth
Good old water!
No added sugar squashes added to water - supermarket own variety or robinsons
Tea

Think that was it - good luck and a speedy recovery

Nez...I'm due for a by-pass op on the 10th July and have all this to come..Sorry to hear it's not been going to well for you and really hope the sun shines for you again very shortly...
Markx
