Am I normal

http://tickers.wlsurgery.
I'm 3 weeks post op today and every time I eat I get hiccups is this normal, I also get a tight feeling in my throat as if the food is stuck but after a couple of minutes this disappears is this normal.

I can eat anything as long as it is blended and also I have tried a bit of cold chicken and a spoon of spag bog which was also fine even unblended.

I don't seem able to eat a lot in a day I will have only 5 spoons of blended food, pint of milk, 1 coffee and maybe some squash I really cannot force anything else in, should I be having more or is this normal am I normal ? ;) don't answer the last question lol

I cant answer any of your questions as I am still pre-op

But whats normal.:eek::eek:

Everyone's different in the quantities they can fit in.

I used to worry about the amounts I could get down during the liquid/puree stages as it seemed quiet a lot.

As long as your drinking plenty I wouldn't worry about the amount your eating at the moment. You will gradually increase the quantities as time goes on. Sometimes the consistency of the food also dictates how much you can get down, with dryer foods taking up more pouch space than those with sauces etc.

If you're still worried about what you can get down speak to your dietician and they should be able to put your mind at ease x

I agree with Gail. We're all different, but we all seem to worry about whether we are having too much or not enough.

Just go with what feels comfortable at this stage, and slowly try to increase it. Drinking is far more important than eating.

I too get hiccups when I am full up. They usually go after a minute or two though. That took a bit of getting used to.

And are you normal? No! But you already knew that.

Hun normal who is normal i def am not :) ur doing really well and as long as ur managing the fluids then dont stress bout how much ur eating.
I am 7 weeks post off and i cant manage more than 2/3 tbs at a meal, i plenty of people at my stage or earlier stage can eat more but we are all dff.
I was told our pouches range from 30mls to 50 mls and i have the smallest one hence not eating much but am happy with that now lol.

You are very early post op and things will change for u from week to week as they do for all of us so dont worry bout it, and like Sam said i 2 get hiccups if i eat one mouthful 2 much and if i had the second mouthful 2 much then i would bypass the hiccups and be sick so its like a warning signal to u xx

Thanks for all the replies, I was getting worried as I had read some where that we should be having 6 small meals a day and I'm struggling with just the one.

I have moved on to blended foods and really enjoying this bit, cant believe how different foods taste, I never really liked fish that much only salmon, tuna and smoked fish but now I love fish, any type of fish lol I could live on fish everyday which I no is good for the protein so I'm happy about that. i also tried the WW yoghurt's as they are on special in Tesco and they are sooooo tasty and only 1/2 a point

So far on blended I have had chicken dinner, pork dinner, fish dinner, cheese & potato, faggots and peas yum yum and i can gladly say all stayed put the only thing that made me sick was scrambled egg but I was only 2 weeks post op and I no I shouldn't of had it but I really wanted it :( not in any rush to have that again.

I have also brought some fruit in fruit juice, can we have these or am I likely to have dumping syndrome, this is something I really don't want

Thanks Sam love you to lol :)

I've been fine with fruit (so far), just try small quatities 1st and see how you go. It's all trial & error!

I'm 4 weeks out and I seem to have different issues with Betty, my pouch, each day. Sometimes cold things go down well, sometimes warmer is better, sometimes solids go down well, sometimes I cope with soft things better. It's a constant journey of exploration :)

I get the hiccups a lot too. I did have a hiatus hernia nd my surgeon said he would fix that when he did my bypass, so I guess it's bruising or irritation of my diaphragm.

Fresh fruit should be ok if you can cope with the texture. You may have problems with orange segment skins. I would give any tinned fruit a wide berth for a while and then only try a small bit. Probably quite high in sugar.

I used to get hiccups quite often at the stage you are at and i also got that tight feeling in my throat! I was told that both were a sign of having eaten to restriction. I still get the hiccups occaisonally but now the tightness in the throat is replaced by my nose getting blocked up! xx
