sorry if this is to much info but ive only been to the toilet once since my op two weeks ago,i can feel i need to go but nothing comes out,its so painful!! is this normal?? ive given birth TWICE and found it easier than this lol xx HELP IM VERY CONSTIPATED LADY!

You're impacted, so you need help to poo fast. First step, try glycerol suppositories, which you can buy over the counter. If they don't work you'll need to see your doctor for a stronger prescription enema. Once you've cleared the impaction you can use movicol to help prevent it happening again.

If you use normal over the counter laxatives when impacted it can make you feel worse, so be careful.

I got the same way when I was pregnant, it's a horrible feeling.

thankyou for the reply, ive got a doctor app monday as im scared of buying anything over the counter like that but dont think i can wait all weekend, even my stomach is so bloated, its awful xx

I'm not there yet so I'm sure people who have had wls will be able to offer more advice but have you tried prune juice? I've heard some people swear by it. I don't fancy it my self but you could water it down if you don't like the taste or want to reduce the amount of sugar intake. I hope you feel more...um...comfortable soon!

x

Glycerol is very safe, and very effective.

yep tried prune juice :( im also drinking gallons of water as recommended, this is a common side effect of our surgery ive been told, brilliant lol xx

OMG- nice to know I'm not the only one facing this. My doctor prescribed me a mild laxative. I invested in prune juice and have found that liquidizing blue berries with my protein shake gets my bowels moving. I'm not as often as I used to pre-op but I at least go every three days. My doctor also says drink more water.

Does anyone have a list of laxatives that are safe for us to take?

It varies hugely from team to team, so you are best checking with your surgeon. For example I was told only movicol, no senna based products, but others have been discharged with senna.

Ithink its a case of finding something that works for you I am 9 months post and still have the problem the last 3 weeks i have been having a glass of prune juice each day and prune fat free yoghurt a day it has helped a lot but still have the odd day where i don't go then it gets akward to pass the next time, a lot of people swear by the glycerol suppositories or the dulcolax suppositories you could go and get some tonight before the shops shut you can't go all weekend like that i know i'v tried it continously, each time i think i'v cracked it i'm back to square 1, i didnt fancy suppositories but its better than not being able to go, I have found that when i cant go it presses towards my vaginal wall so can't get out, as we push down sometimes it turns back on its self so you are then trying to pass a doubled up amount which is even worse, i have had to man handle it on occasions but it needs to come out some how, try something and get it moving now before it get any worse. good luck xx

In prep for my op I have been to GP and he has given me Movicol, the patient advice note says its used for impaction, the does is 8 sachets in a litre of water to be drunk throughout the day and within 6 hours. 'normal' constipation is up to three sachets a day.

My consultant said movicol which is why I got some form gp in preparation

I had this problem when on lighter life. The pain is horrific. Go with the suppositires (cant spell sorry). I used to use ducolax and felt awful afterwards. Are you allowed black coffee as this used to help me?

This happened to me when I was only drinking milk when I was 17. The doc gave me suppositories, lactalose (sp?) solution and a cream.

It was one of the most horrible toilet experiences knowing I needed to go and couldn't. It was painful!!! So I really feel for you.

I am as regular as pre op. so can only empathise from my past experience x

How you doing today Tracy have you managed to go yet? Hope so i know its terrible having to suffer but suffer we do xx

yess ive been woohoo :) very painful! black coffee did the trick for me no medicines but im still going to my doctor on monday to ask for something incase it happens often xx thankyou everyone xx

Yes now you have been need to keep it moving, prune juice is ok tastes better than it looks, and does help. Betterbthan taking meds but do what you have to , nothing worse than constipation. xx

I had the same problem, and took some Fybogel with about 3 fluid oz water and although it felt weird going down, did me the world of good. Not sure whether it was ok to take it though.

Mine was so bad i had to go to hospital for an enema and even then when I did go, I tore a bit.. Not pleasant. but now I make sure that I take Movicol regularly and the thing that really works for me is orange juice with bits.
I keep a strict note of when I go so if I have not gone for 2 days, I make sure I do something about it. I never want to go through that experience again !!
Even pre op I was always cobnstipated and could go a week between times.

I wasn't as bad as that, I hadn't been for a week. I was diagnosed with diverticulosis just over 10 years ago and had to take a fibre supplement since then. I was starting to get the niggling pains so thought I had better do something to get some fibre in and quick. Glad to hear you are all sorted now :)
