I'm pretty sure the nurse at my gp's surgery has worked out my bmi wrong, she said it was 44. ok so far , NICE guidelines say 40 or over, however...I read an article about Doncaster's new bariatric surgery centre which is where I'm hoping to go and it says patients referred there have a bmi of 45 or over. I've checked my bmi myself and with my height and weight it says 47. The referral letter only went in on 22 july. should I just wait? will they want to check my bmi for themselves anyway?

Firstly phone the GP and ask what they have written down for your height and weight. At that point if there is an error you will probably need to go back to the doctors and get them to recalculate it.

If they do, you can then ask them to send another referral letter. Better to do this than worry about it.

Good luck

Phone up your GP and query it if you think it's wrong :) If it was an admin error they can correct and resend.

i think they go by the nice guidelines anyway.
Depends on co morbidities also.
If you find out where your referral was sent you could ring the unit and ask if your referral had been accepted. You could also explain your worries.

no need to phone I got a reply today! it said they could not accept referrals from gps and to refer me to Doncaster healthy lifestyles where I would be assessed. they enclosed a referral form which I can send myself or my gp can send it as they also sent him a copy. It could be a couple of week before I can manage to get an appointment with my gp (everyone wants to see him!) so I've sent it myself with my correct bmi on it. my gp may end up sending it also but never mind at least they've got it. :)

Hi Lesley

Download it yourself then ring the Doncaster Healthy weight Solutions, this is where I went a great team. 01302 366666 ext 3711 or 0800 917 6264
You also get a free pass for the gym and swimming
But they wont put you forward for WLS, you need to see there dietian and they will do.
It's a 12 week course.

I saw nat at intake, she's really good.

Doctors dont seem to know much about this op, I go every month to get weighed and he asked me allsorts.

If you are having the operation in Doncaster Royal, every 2nd Thursday they have a meeting for WLS people. It's in South Block and starts at 7:30pm.
It's on this Thursday, I dont mind meeting you if you want to check it out.

hi willow, thanks so much for the info I'd love to go to the meeting but unfortunately I work thurs evenings and it's not enough notice for this week, I could go next time though if I book it off. Anyway I posted the form today so just waiting now to hear back from them, I really hope that when they assess me I meet the criteria. I'm so glad to talk to someone who's had it done at Doncaster, hope you don't mind me picking your brains. you'll probably get fed up of all my questions!:)

Hi Lesley

Next meeting is the 8th of October, I will be going to this one but not the November.
Once you have done 50 threads I will be able to private message you, I will give you my mobile number.
When you arn't working, I dont mind meeting up somewhere in Doncaster for a coffee.

Take care

Elaine
