Hair Loss - anyone know about this?

Hi
I have been looking on youtube for people that have had a bypass. There is one woman that looks as though she is going bald. Is this a common problem with having a bypass? and is there anything that can be done to prevent this from happening?

It's one of the problems that you're made aware that 'may' happen.

It's to do with iron and other mineral and nutrient deficiences. It's not something that crops up a lot but can happen.

You can get suppliments from chemists/health stores or your doctor can prescribe something.

You need Zinc & Selenium (hope that's spelled correctly!)

I've been taking Silica Complex from Holland & Barrett. Although it's early days for me yet, I haven't noticed anything significant hair wise.

There's quite a few threads on hair loss on here, and a lot of us have had variable losses.Mine is still shedding and i'm 8 months post op, although I take silica every day, but i'm not bald yet;):D

My hair is falling out quite a lot. I have a cream coloured coat (i'm very dark haired) and I noticed loads of hair on the collar recently. I started off with very thick hair so it's not noticeable to others yet but I am worried about it and have started to take zinc and selenium so hopefully that will help. I think I read that after about 6 months your body adapts and it stops coming out.

Stella I read the same about the 6 month thing, as well as only 10% of people lose their hair, and quite frankly in the post bypass mates I have we have ALL lost considerable amounts of hair:(:(
Maybe we are the unlucky ones, or the stats are way out;):D

I agree Candie I think the stats are well out - I am also experiencing bad hair loss - luckily I have thick hair so it's not too bad. My surgen wrote to GP and put me on selenase solutiom so fingers crossed

My hair started coming out at about 3 months post-op - I knew this was to be expected and so it wasn't a surprise.

My hair is very thin anyway and I really thought I was going to go bald - it just got very very thin - then gradually fell out less and less and then started to come back.

It was as straight as a yard of pump water before and while not curly has a definite kink in it now!! Strange!!

I knew hair loss was a side-effect of the extreme weight loss so am surprised that people above say it's not a common problem

My surgeon says zinc and selenium doesn't stop it falling out but can help the condition of it - the falling out is a direct result of the stress of the weight loss on the body

My hair has always fallen out at times of stress - and I still have spells when the plug hole gets full - but I never went bald

Best wishes Angela x :553:

I thought I'd got away with it, but now 4 months post-op my hair is falling out. Every time I run my hands through it I have about 20 hairs in my fingers. I have to unplug the shower twice after bathing. Like many others I had thick hair so now it looks like normal hair, which is quite nice for me. I hope it stops soon though as it makes me feel messy with hair on my jacket etc.

Hair loss !! Yes I have it bad at the moment and it's driving me mad !! I had very thick long hair I don't have any bald patches but I can see definate signs of hair loss as it is thinner now and I have always had such thick hair, I take zinc and selenium and I don't find this helps at all, I have had all the blood tests and I have little green ticks to say everything is fine.I have been losing hair since being around 8 weeks post op, I am almost 5 months post op nnow and losing it in brush fulls I have to use mr muscle sink unblocker in the bath and I am so sick of cleaning it up from my floors it's everywhere!! wish it would just stop before I become bald!!! ;o(

I am only 2 weeks post op, I haven't noticed anything yet but I have been advised on taking Silica complex. Apparently it's amazing and as I have fine hair already it will thicken my hair. The only thing that concerns me is that the tablets are quite big and wondered if it is too soon post op to swallow such a large tablet, any advice?

Mine started to fall out around three months post op and distressed me big time as soooooo much has been coming out, thank God that I have thick hair naturally so it just looks 'normal' now. I did get some zinc and selenium but decided not to take it and to just 'ride it out'.
I am about to hit five months post op now and this past week I have noticed a slow down in the amount coming out. I have been reluctant to say that out loud in case I jinx myself but I showed my hubby my hairbrush and he said "oh yeah, there is less there now", so I think that it may be slowing down now. Here's hoping so anyway.
Like others have said, I researched before surgery and saw that lots of people have said that they knew about it before surgery but that it still upset them and I totally know what they mean, no amount of research or preperation will get you ready for standing there in the shower with literally hand fulls of hair!!! (if youre unlucky!!!).

this si the one thing i am not looking forward to lol
I have screwed my hair around by having dread extensions plaited in on and off for the last 10 years :) so it's not as thick as it used to be...oh well gives me an excuse to go out and buy loads of mad coloured wigs to go out in if i feel like it hahaha

i heard it happens 3-6 months post op due to your body deciding that hair growth is not a necessary function while it adapts to the surgery so it takes nutrients away from there to put elsewhere.
It's more that you lose the normal hair but for a while the body isn't growing any new hair to replace it for a while like it would normally

my hair is currently a few inches below my shoulders, but have always wondered if a short cut would suit me....may end up finding out lol
