New guy saying hi!

Hello All,

I just found this forum. I wish I'd found it a few months ago.

I had my surgery 5 days ago, on Wednesday 16th April 2014.
I chose the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass procedure.

I'm new to all this, so I'm here to learn and share my experiences.

I had my bypass on 17th Oct 2013 at St Richard's, Chichester (I've lost 16st since July 2013 - my assessment day at the hospital)...

I havent looked back... seriously its the best thing I have ever done!

I'm getting on okay - I ended up being in hospital for 4 days due to a chest infection developed after surgery. I didn't really feel much pain though.

I had epidural pain relief administered just prior to general anaesthetic and frankly, it was marvellous. The positives outweighed the negatives, IMO, I'd recommend it to anyone. I was completely pain-free for about 36 hours in the end. The downside was that it caused a "spinal block", leaving me unable to pee for nearly 28 hours. I just didn't have any muscle power down-below to assist.

I'm a little concerned at the moment that I'm not getting the full-feeling when I'm eating at the moment, but this is due to internal swelling and will improve, apparently. Is that a common experience? I'm on day 5 of liquids only today. I move to puréed foods next Sunday.

My surgery went well, I developed a post-op chest infection, so I ended up having a 4 day stay in hospital. I'm doing okay on liquids now, tbh, I'm not really sure when I'm 'full', but I understand that's because I'm still swollen inside from the surgery and it will take a while to kick in.

I do know that as of today, my weight is 129.6kg, down from a starting weight on April 2nd of 140.5kg. I had previously peaked at 147kg.

I'm relatively pain free, although the epidural pain relief was a big help. Has anyone else here had their surgery at St Mary's, Paddington? I found them to be absolutely excellent.

I started the process in August 2013 with a desperate plea to my GP for surgery. My BMI was 43, so I met the criteria of my PCT (Ealing).

I was sent a letter about 6 weeks later from the Imperial Weight Loss Centre at St Mary's, to come for an information seminar in November 2013. I went to the seminar, where I had blood tests and an ECG, then had the 45 minute talk from the team - surgeons, doctors, psychiatrist, dietician.

My follow-up appointment was on December 20th, this is where I met my surgeon, Mr Krishna Moorthy. He works with Mr Ahmed R Ahmed, a prominent Bariatric surgeon in the UK. Mr Moorthy was very straightforward with me. We discussed surgical options and I settled on the RNY bypass, with a sleeve as back-up, in case bypass wasn't doable once surgery had begun.

The biggest wait I had was to see the psychiatrist - I had an appointment for February 19th, this was cancelled and rebooked for March 12th, by the hospital.

I was called on March 27th and offered surgery on April 16th, less than 3 weeks later. I accepted the date.

I guess that brings me to where I am today.

I'll happily answer any questions anyone has - after all, we're all here to learn and share and support one another.

When you are a newbie posts are automatically moderated and sometimes some of them can be moderated if they are a little longer than usual as it is a bit aggressive as the system it's not perfect but it helps keep spam off the forums.

I also saw the psychologist on 12th March. But my journey started in November so I have a wait ahead I think. I have found them to be amazing so far. Just the admin seems rather adhoc, lol

A colleague of mine had a bypass under St Mary's and he also can't fault them

HelenAngelfish - give Debbie O'Rourke a call and chase it up. If we both saw the Psych on March 12th, your case should have been through the MDT meeting already, so she should have some info. Worth a go. Best of luck!

Thanks. I will give it a go.

But last week I was told my case hasn't sat an mdt yet, as they had a couple of months backlog.

Which would tie up as my appointments are a month or so after yours, you're preop was 20th December and mine was 4th February xx

I'm guessing my date will be end of May or End of June xx

I found it didn't really work like that. After the Psych appointment on March 12th, I called Debbie two days later and asked what the process is next. She said to wait a week then call her. I called the following week and she said she'd put me in the following weeks' MDT meeting which is on a Thursday morning and she'd call me straight after the meeting. At this stage, she even gave me a provisional date of April 16th, to be confirmed when she called.

Give her a bell, after all, you're the patient and you have a right to know what's going on instead of being at the mercy of a piece of paper in a filing tray. Good luck!
