Hi everyone. I attended my first appointment/consultation earlier this week. I have been given a target weight to lose (10% of my body weight). I am to be reffered to respiratory for sleep apnoea assessment. Can someone explain what this assessment entails. I am feeling really nervous about this whole process but even more so about surgery:eek:

hi and welcome to a great site. Like you i have to lose between 5 and 10% also. I too have sleep apnea . With me they set me up with a sleep embletta machine which i used at home whilst I slept. It takes everything to pulse, bp, breaths, pauses, oxygen levels etc etc. This will give them a recorded history of your might. Ira amazing what it records. I dint think i had it nut my partner told i did stop breathing each night. The machine picked up i stopped breathing 20 odd times an hour. Which is classed as moderate sleep apnoea . Theres mild moderate and severe . I have to use a Capp machine now!!! Hope once i have surgery I will get rid of it! You can also do same sleep assessment at centre. But at home you will obviously be more relaxed and get a more accurate reading as you are in your own environment. Best wishes hun .

Thanks sharona thats put my mind at ease that i can do it at home and not at the hospital. I hope i dont have sleep apnea as the consultant says it will delay the operation because i need to use it for 8 weeks prior surgery. Even though i rather be tested for it and have surgery delayed if if means my operation will be safer

glad I was of help. Yes u was told the same because it will open up the air way which will be narrow esp if you have sleep ap for a long time also oxygen levels etc will be too. Its best also to get that sorted if you God for bid have it. As you don't want to stop whilst having surgery and it causes major set backs! I have to bring in my capp machine when im going in for surgery. Best wishes tho maddy lets get this sorted so you can have safe surgery! All the best let me know how you get on xx

Not got sleep apnea appointment till 11th of December long wait. But got my dietician in 4 weeks only lost a pound per week so far which amounts to a whopping 2 pounds is not enough i need to kick it up a gear but i will let you know how i got on. And good luck to you

Hello and welcome. Yes I too have sleep ap and as Sharona says we have to take it everywhere with you if you have a CPAP even to hospital because I was told after surgery your oxygen levels go low. The actual test as Sharona said is painless and I too did it at home. Best of Luck to you !!

What area are you in? You will probably be given a cpap machine to trial at your appointment

In west midlands stoke to be exact. Didnt know i had to trial it. Thought i got given it and 2 to 4 weeks before surgery. I hope there isnt a further delay

So i just got a provisional date of 10 of july. Whilst im happy i was hoping for a sooner date. Ive waited for three years to find a job that works for me and my family and the opportunity finally presents itself. Ive jumped through hoops for this surgery now i might have to choose one or the other. Who wants to employ someone who is going to take time off as soon as they start. Feeling sad very sad. Why does nothing ever go right.

Oh my gosh ! Look at that weight you have lost ! Wowsers Maddy !
How do you feel in yourself.

I feel awesome lol. Love checking myself out in every reflection I walk past. Most importantly I feel like I've been given a second chance so I've taken it. I'm ready for the next chapter tone tone tone. Obviously after my final weight loss target .
