Gained - 5 weeks post op... Help!

After a week of walking, swimming and eating on average 900kcals a day I have gained .2 of a pound. Now I know .2 is not the end of the world but how the hell have I gained weight. I have been through the menopause (v.early) so it's not to do with a period or anything.

This has really thrown me as I thought I was doing so well. I have weighed every day since the op and never shown a gain. Obviously some days I have stayed the same. This time after 5 days of not weighing I wake up to (I know I am over dramatic) but devastating news.

Any suggestions people?

Stop weighing every day, it will fry your brain and your resolve. 0.2 of a pound is a couple of ounces, it seriously is not worth worrying about, it could be anything, a bit of fluid retention, you need a poo (sorry!). Just keep on with what you are doing and in general as long as it's going in the right direction don't fret!

Thanks siana but that is easier said than done. I did so much walking and swimming this week and really was expecting a loss. Just disheartening :'(

And you're exercising, which changes the weight dynamic. Try measuring as well, it's not all about actual weight loss, you can be "shrinking" too or losing visceral fat (important) but building muscle so overall on the scales it cancels out

Will do that today :). Did I read somewhere that everyone has a plateau sometime? Hoping this is mine.

A stall or small regain a few weeks out is normal. I saw so much of this type of post pre op that I didn't weigh myself for 4 weeks post op to try and avoid that :) Yes, it was hard but I had a battle with obsessive weighing years ago with my first WLS. I still had a week when I knew I Was bloated so I didn't weigh and resolved then to only weigh every 4 weeks.

Unfortunately I have had some fluid retention issues and my GP doesn't want me to take my meds for that unless it gets really bad and she asked me to weigh mire frequently to keep an eye on it. Humpf. Bad bad bad GP.

What I am attempting to say rather badly is, it will come off if you follow the rules but don't expect the drop to be in a straight line. Your body does all sorts of weird tricks but the overall trajectory is down down down. :) Please don't let the devils invention called scales be the thing that decides wether you have a bad day or not.. try not weighing for a few and see how you go.

I had a 2lb gain at one point early on, it happens...if you keep following the rules the losses will continue. Since that gain I have lost every week...sometimes 1lb sometimes more.

Because you have started exercising your muscles will initially retain water as part of the healing process. My daughter is dieting and working with a PT and if she has a heavy session with him the day before weigh day she will not weigh in as she knows it will not be accurate.

I agree with Siana58...stop weighing everyday, your body fluctuates naturally, it will become an obsession. Once a week is plenty.

Keep up your good work and try not to panic

Thanks all. Will go back to weighing on a Monday only as that is the "normal" weigh day for me. Haven't measured yet, but did try on a few clothes and they are definitely getting looser. On the other side, my other half suggested as i had a few sweet things on my hols (sorbet and ice lollies) maybe it is a glycogen gain. Going to ignore it, and weigh in just once a week.

Again, thanks all.... stupid scales spoiling my day.

Is the exercise new? Adding exercise to any diet almost always causes a stall that week. You tend to get the reward for the exercise a week or two later.

It was just holiday walking and swimming with kids. Will watch and see when/if I get a reward. Thanks :)

im exercising more and people are warning and telling me over and over - muscle weighs more than fat.... scary scary

1lb of muscle weighs the same as 1lb of fat :8855: so actually they weigh the same. The difference however is if you gain a chunk of muscle in place of the same chunk of fat, however that takes time and certainly shouldn't affect your weight loss as you will have more muscles which in turn need more energy (food) in order to work.

My week actually resulted in a loss instead of the .2lb gain, so clearly I was holding water. I am hoping like someone said above that the extra exercise I did will show a bigger loss in a few weeks.

Well done on your increased exercise, that I truly believe is the long term answer. :D

Depends on how you look at it. If you say that an inch of muscle versus an inch of fat weighs more, you'd be right.

Most people would say that concrete weighs more than feathers. A lb of each weigh the same, but that's not really what people mean.

Sweetheart step away from the scales... Seriously try to get into the habit of weighing once a month, then get a tape measure and measure once a month. I promise you will find even if the weight doesn't move the inches will.

I think your a bit too early in to be on a plateau but that does happen too. I know it's easier said than done but try not to obsess over it.

Thanks bonita, will try this reduce to once a week first ;) my measurements I do do once a month and I am happy with the results. I guess he problem I had was managing my expectations.. Loads of cals out and vey few in = lose weight and I didn't. It's coming back off now though.
