My Weight loss Journey 2014 onwards

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to start a Diary as I have my first consultation tomorrow with Mr Galloway at Nuffield Hospital in Glasgow.

I am starting now to keep myself motivated and allow myself and others if they wish to share in my weight loss journey.

I was referred to local weight loss service and attended my first appointment, although they were lovely, i realized it was going to be a long road, (2Years before consideration to surgery) to which I have already travelled a distance. I have ongoing health issues and my weight has been impacting them as i have steadily put on weight...each time weighed in the doctors i have gained...! I can feel it in my back, knees and ankles..i have arthritis in my knee due to a previous surgery which has impacted my activity which i'm sure has played a small impact in my weight gain. So with my parents assistance I am borrowing some of the money to get a gastric band operation as I feel through research this is the op to benefit me, although i will discuss with the doc.

Just like everyone else have tried majority of the diets..the one that worked while was on it was the Dukan diet..lost 3 dress sizes...i say dress sizes as i refused to weigh myself at this point but like always i went on holiday, never went back on the diet and put back on weight and more i lost.

I feel my weight is holding me back at work, and despite being more than capable for the job, i always seem to just miss any promotions, regardless of how much great feedback i get from staff i currently work with or any performance reviews i get.

I understand this maybe in my head but i'm curious to see if i get any promotions when i lose weight! I do love my job and the people i work with, so please don't think its soul destroying job but I do want to move up and I will! :)

anyways...I am little nervous but very excited to see the doctor tomorrow...when i say nervous this is due to me always worrying...for example 'what if he cant operate on me when i have time off, what if there's another reason' etc but so keen to start!

My head is in the zone as I know I cannot continue living like this, I want to be out dancing enjoying life...taking walks etc rather than just sitting waiting to do it!!

So hopefully from tomorrow I will begin to post updates on whether my surgeon can do surgery during my holidays ( I'm not sharing surgery with anyone except parents) and what diet etc i will be following pre surgery!

I am excited for whats ahead!! :)

I love this site and think i have read a good majority of the posts on all surgery types...so thank you for sharing, I hope i can be of benefit to others considering the same options as myself!

Hello and what a great blog! it does everyone good to sit down and make a note of the path they have undertaken. I do a daily food intake as I need to reflect on the mistakes/good days I have and to have them out in the open
everyone has at some point been where you are so your not alone in any of the feelings you have.
good luck in all you wish for

Welcome and good luck!
I was banded at nuffield Guildford just over a week ago and don't regret it one bit! A lot of your post rung true with me too and I'm sure many others on here.
Good luck for your appt tomorrow, wrote down any questions you have now as I know I did feel a little overloaded with information after my first one so it just helped me to jog my memory!
All the best :)

Hi everyone,

I was just posting an update...

Well I received a voicemail from Nuffield advising that they had to cancel my appointment as the doctor hasn't shown up for his surgery, they tried all points of contact and when they spoke to his NHS secretary she thought he was annual leave and this wasn't communicated to Nuffield.

Gutted is an understatement, as had to try and organise time off from work. I went in and spoke to the outpatient manager who had a chat about the doctors and I have been rebooked in with Mr Gibson on Wednesday night, he has agreed to stay late due to the appointments being missed.

I try to stay positive and that everything happens for a reason, so I'm going with the I'm going to lose more weight plan lol!

I hope everyone else is having a nice day xx

Hi there! I just thought I'd say hello. I live in Scotland and had a gastric sleeve at Spire Murrayfield (Edinburgh) in Dec 2011. I've lost my excess weight, been stable for over a year, and I've had surgery to remove excess skin on tummy and boobs. It's not an easy journey but I can't believe I've done it and now am a healthy bmi!!

Good luck on your journey.

Hi Crackers169

Thanks for your message!!

That's a great achievement!!! :)

It's certainly a life changing experience!! I'm just out of Tesco stocking up on the NAS jelly a for 25p...think the man at the checkout thought I was mad!! I promise I left some for everyone else, was stacks!

Have you shared to others that you had surgery??

I did look at Spire, but they are a bit over my budget, and the reviews of Nuffield are good!

What doctor did you see? X

Yes I told everyone!!!

The Edinburgh surgeons work as a team but it was Mr De Beaux who did my gastric sleeve. The nurse Lorna is contactable 24/7 after the op and the dietician Fred is a great character. Both were invaluable support. I went with them coz if there had been any trouble with my diabetes, they knew my diabetes team at my local hospital.

Good luck with it all.

Aw that's good to hear!! Has it helped with your diabetes? My mum has diabetes, I imagine I would be borderline for it, as each time tested it comes back negative!

My mum recently lost 5 stone, not through bariatric help, but though ongoing issues, and Is due operation for pre cancerous lesions and they have advised that losing weight has benefited her for the surgery, although I think she still has issues with blood sugar x

Hi everyone!

Well that's me been for my first consultation and I'm so excited!!! Me Gibson was so lovely, took time to explain everything and answered any queries I had.

I explained about wanting to do the surgery during my annual holidays, but he is oncall for his NHS surgery, so brought it forward to 23 Aug!! I just hope I can get my holidays switched at work without too many questions, He did say he would write a letter advising I would need 2weeks off, and would just state surgery but not go into details!

So excited!!

He advised to try lose little weight first so aiming for 14lbs or 5kg before pre op diary and 5kg during pre op diet... before surgery.

I have still to see the dietician to go over the diet but likely be 900cals a day for the pre op xx

If anyone has any hints tips before It would be much appreciated!! Xx

Hi everyone,

Just looking for a bit of advice...I'm planning on buying a protein powder, established that 100% Whey seems to be what I'm looking for, but what if blending it, would mix it with, pre and post op??

I was thinking milk, but is that too much? Make it into a milkshake style? Or smoothie with veg??

I'm going shopping at the weekend and don't think I will speak to my dietician before then...

I'm thinking doing a low cal diet for next couple weeks then switching to whatever preop diet they recommend? X

I got my letter today confirming my appointment for 23rd August, and a PreOp for 11th August, which I assumed was also the Dietician appointment but I think I will hear from her earlier as their recommended pre op is 14days!

I bought my protein powder, plus a shake meal from boots to start with on Monday, also got my fitness pal going again, I'm so nervous as I want to make sure I lose weight before the surgery but over past year been hard to lose, hopefully if follow everything the scales will move in the right direction!!

:)
