Pre-op Diet April 18th

I am looking for advise. I'm a little nervous about starting the diet. I would like to know what helped get you through.

Knowing that if I don't stick to the pre op diet then the surgery won't be done! I'm currently on day 2 of my milk and yoghurt diet. It's killing me but I know that I have to stick to it! M x

I don't start mine until next week, but I know that getting through it will get me the operation and ultimately my new life. I have to do the pre-op for 3 weeks. Op is on 15th may.

Good luck with it. xx

The first 2 to 4 days are the hardest but knowing that the op could be either cancelled or I could risk real danger on the operating table if my liver wasn't right kept me on the straight and narrow.

Yup, I echo Butterfly lady - days 2-4 are the worst. I had terrible headaches on those days, but once you get to the other side the hunger goes and so do the headaches and you feel fine.

I tried to get variety into what I was eating which is not easy when you can only have Milk, Jelly and Bovril but I bought chicken and beef Bovrils and alternated them. The Milk I had plain or made an iced chocolate frappe with NAS Syrup (Amazon is a wonderful thing) and blitzed the milk, syrup and ice cubes up in a blender.
I had Vanilla Lattes and added Vanilla essence to warm milk (tasted like ice cream!!)

I picked different flavour jellies and made a different flavour each day - found a lovely Cherry one. And for those times when my mouth just needed to be occupied or I had cravings, I chewed Sugar Free Gum.

It does get easier!

I'm on day four today and slowly adjusting. Day 2 was the hardest, yesterday was a little easier although I was really grumpy!

I am on the NHS slimfast diet so I've been having 5 pre-mixed shakes a day, been alternating the flavours. I'm also allowed one stock cube per day, the Knorr ones are good - I split a cube and half for lunch and half for dinner in a mug like soup. With my one sachet of jelly I've split that as well - have half for breakfast and half for dessert!

So far I've discovered a couple of "hacks" these are to make coffee with a splash of mocha or vanilla slimfast - it tastes like Starbucks! Sweet and syrupy but it's not. The other one is to blend a shake with jelly and pop it in the freezer for a few hours, it's fake icecream and the change in texture and temperature is a welcome change.

Last night I was thinking and realised I could make ice pops with sugar free squash so I will do this over the weekend, need to buy some freezer moulds.

What's keeping me going is knowing that if I don't stick to it and they open me up they will be able to tell and won't do my op - I will have blown my one change for a new life.

Good luck with it, you'll wee non-stop for the first couple of days!

Oh, and another thought!

After a long day at work I am knackered and just want to chill out. I have updated Love Film so I can just lay down and zone out with a movie - I have found TV is full of food, if it's not master chef it's food ads or come dine with me, drove me insane last night!

I know what you are talking about! Lol

I was watching tv last night and so many food commercials, I had to change the channel. I just started my pre-op diet yesterday and it has been a struggle!!

I've given up on tv, way too much food. I'm on day 6 today and I'm used to it now but really lacking in energy. Today my sister came round and we went through all my clothes and shoes and had a huge clear out. I took 5 black sacks to the local charity shop and I'm selling heaps on eBay as a plus sized clearance! Doing my listings is keeping me away from tv and the fridge (not that there's anything in it) and this weekend it's free to list so hopefully I'll make some cash for post op shopping! The biggest size I'm selling is a size 26 skirt which was always too big but has been haunting me for years and then mainly size 20 - 22 tops.
I've dropped 8kg now since January, 2 kg on this horrible diet. Hopefully more to come!

I am trying to stay away from the tv makes me too hungry. I wish I had lost some weight already. I can't wait till I get to the point where I can sell some of my clothes too!!

Stacey, I've been staying away from the t.v. to, too much temptation. I wish that I had lost enough weight to d sell some of my clothes but I know that will come in time! !

I'm going through day 7 hell. I have heart palpitations and NO energy. I wish it wasn't a bank holiday so I could call the team at Homerton and ask for some advice.

Thanks Crystal Rainbow, I called the out of hours GP and they said it sounded like low blood sugar and urged me to eat a banana so I did that and instantly felt better. I called my team today at Homerton and they were so supportive, I've been pulled off the slimfast diet and put onto the 1000 calorie low carb food diet until further notice. The dietician is speaking to my specialist tomorrow as she thinks it is something to do with some diabetes medication I'd been prescribed for appetite suppression. (I'm not diabetic, it is occasionally given for weight loss) so, until I hear next steps I'm back on food which is really stange. I had a can of tuna with salad and 2 baby potatoes for dinner followed by a pot of cottage cheese - I feel like I'm going to explode, I'm so full! I am just so grateful I have such a good medical team, I can't fault them, I'm in safe hands. 7 slopes until surgery....eeeek! Xx

That's great news Stacey, glad you've perked up. I've completed day 1 and feel OK. Just want the next 3 weeks to fly by. :0)

Thanks Terrilou, which pre op diet have you picked? It's so exciting isn't it?! I just can't wait! 7 days until my op now. My mother is arriving in London on Friday morning from New Zealand to look after me, will be great to have her around as I think I'd underestimated the recovery time etc until joining this forum. X

I'm supposed to be doing the pre-op diet with food, but as I've done Lighterlife before, I've decided to do that. 3 weeks on that will be easy enough, especially with the op at the end of it for inspiration.
