So I am only supposed to be having 3 slim fast shakes a day and lots of water nothing else, that is only 690 calories a day. It seems so so strict and at the end of day two I am struggling so much. Has anyone else been given a diet as low calorie as this? I can't help thinking an extra shake or a bit of fish wouldn't hurt.

I'm on the Slimfast diet too but on 5x a day, so obviously not as strict as yours.
I definitely understand your struggle as I too was hungry on day two (yours twice as much) and this lasted until about day 4.

After day 4, the hunger or should I say the thought of food reduced dramatically. I'm currently about to be on day 10 of 21.

Try your best to keep on hanging in there. Try taking you shakes hot/warm (I did that with Café Latte, felt like I was taking a creamy cuppa) it could make you feel fuller.

How long do you have to be on your preop? Hopefully not too long.

I was on 3 slim fasts a day too, after around day 3 -4 it gets much easier, also prepares you for post op when your calorie intake is even less, stick with it this is the kick start to your new regime, and no pain no gain xx

Thank you for your replies. I'm still really struggling at the end of day 3 but on the plus side the weight is just falling off me. 6 lbs lost in 3 day :)

It's hard, but hang on in there. It gets easier after day 4. Just think of the reward at the end. It's so worth two weeks of struggling :)

Thank you for all your support.

I watched a video of the surgery last night and seeing how they have to list on hold the liver up while operating really helped. It just made me think I really want my liver in the best possible shape when they are doing this to me.

26 days until surgery here and I've been told the same. 3 x SlimFast milkshakes -- I've tried a few times and failed, I was craving a proper meal. I have managed to swap over 1-2 meals/day to the milkshakes in advance hopefully easing my way into the process.

BTW how was Dr Dillemans? He's also my surgeon.

Hi Marcusbm,

Your having the same operation as me with the same surgeon exactly a month apart :)

Dr Dillemans is fantastic, very knowable and skilled and I would definitly recommend him. The travelling was hard getting home though and I would recommend staying staying in Belgium for 4 days post op 2 of them in the hospital. I left hospital after 1 night and though I was able I really with I had had an extra night. I was then told I could travel home the following day but again this felt too soon and I did actually stay an extra day in the hotel before flying. All in all I wouldn't have gone anywhere else I just wish I had had more time to recover before travelling.

All the best with your surgery

May I ask which hotel you stayed at and how you coped with the post-op diet while staying in the hotel.

I've booked at the Ibis Budget - seemed the sensible one as I don't need the meals!

I'm travelling alone by ferry (Harwich-Hoek), train (Hoek-Rotterdam-Antwerp-Bruges) as I like the thought of relaxing in a cabin rather than the hustle and bustle of flying - I'm a frequent flyer and realise it would be a challenge to break my routine (which involves food) so I thought do it the way where food isn't in the routine. Ipswich to Harwich is just a short hop and I have a lift sorted.

When I had my lap-band I was walking around after four days due to a complication so I've been conservative with the hotel time.

My plan is:

11/7 - Leave home
11-12 - overnight ferry and train, check in to hotel
12-13 - enjoy final World Cup games with a few pints of water :D
14 - rest day
15 - consultation day
16 - surgery (night is hospital)
17 - night in hospital
18-21 Hotel
21 - return to Hoek and overnight ferry back to Harwich
22 - Back home

So it's two nights in hospital and three nights in a hotel followed by an overnight in a ferry cabin (where I've booked the one disabled cabin for the return journey)

What is the average length of time they want you on a special preoperative diet? I have been reading differences.

Mostly two weeks, but it depends on your provider and your personal medical situation. Always follow your providers advice xx

Different surgeons have different requirements. I agree with Helen, you need to direct questions through to your provider, however I just get the reply that I should stick to the diet. I was told that herbal tea without sugar or honey is ok. Also there's no actual rule about having a protein shake hot, cold or frozen so I'm considering ideas about how to do that as well. It's about exploring options on how to keep yourself as full as you can without breaking the rules.

Keeping to the rules after the operation is also essential so this is part of the conditioning just as much as it helps to lower weight, reduce the water in body fat and soften the liver. It can also lower hypertension and ease off type II diabetes.
