Bypass and old age!!

middle name OPTIMISTIC!!!
Sorry, another question!

Have thought of loads of questions since coming back from seeing Mr Ashton this afternoon...typical! He said that they started doing a type of bypass back in the late 1800's but dont really know the long term study of it.

What I want to know is, does it have any effect on your long term life? i.e are there any 80yr old people walking around having had bypass surgery or do they not have enough evidence via studies to know whether or not you'll get that far?!

Sounds odd but I've yet to find an elderly bypass person!

Hi there
I can really relate as to why you are asking the question! I wanted to know the same thing. My surgeon told me that bypass has been around since the 70s using open stomach surgery and the laparoscopic Roux-en-Y since the early 90s (think it was 93).

I've no idea if that's true, so just sharing what he told me. Sure others will know more and there's probably a medical internet site with the full history.

Will be intrigued to see what others share. HTH
