Hi Margaret.

5 main causes of this post op -

1) - Anaemia, have you had your iron levels checked recently?

2) - Low B12, again have they been checked? Are you having injections?

3) - Postural Hypotension - This is a rapid drop in your blood pressure when you stand up, causing blackness, dizziness, and fainting. This can come on post op, or be worsened if it is a pre-existing condition. GP/Nurse can check your BP seated and standing to diagnose. No real treatment, just coping strategies.

4) - Dehydration, are you drinking enough?

6) - Low blood sugars, not common and tends to be accompanied by shakiness, palpitations etc as well as dizziness.

Best bet is to see your GP, and if they aren't savvy on post op issues, ask them to check for the above.

Cant add more than what Shell ha posted but can tell u i have had exactly the same and my gp said my blood pressure was a bit low and i also need to up my salt.
Pls go and get it checked out hun xx

It has been happening to me all of the time. The GP took my worries seriously and even sent me to a cardiologist. My BP is low and that is what is causing mine. I have to stand up very carefully or I will become dizzy and pass out. I have had my head stitched up 3 times now because of this. But hey, I am 7 stone lighter. I'll take it.

This happens to me ALL THE TIME!!!

I have been checked out by my GP, everything seems fine, so I have no idea why it's happening.

Hi Margaret. Sorry can't help with your problem but agree with all the above that seeing the GP is the way to go. Just wanted to say how nice it was to see you posting again.

I get it all the time, and apparently mine is also postural hypertension;)

I've been getting the postural hypotension a lot recently so that's just answered a question for me! lol thanks everyone

I really think fluid is the key here, before i went into hospital last week i was feeling lightheaded and a bit dizzy - they found my blood pressure was low - a few days on IV fluids and it was back up again...

It's hard to get those fluids in post op especially as we have to wait before and after eating but it definately stressed the importance of it to me :)

There is medication to treat postural hypotension. we usually recommend pressure stockings and increased salt and fluids first.

Hi Margaret - I had the same thing so I contacted my team - they said it was reactive hypoglycemia and put me on a low GI diet and I have been great since. Have to listen to my body and take sugar when needed etc. They said it does happen to some after surgery. Hope this is helpful and you start to feel better soon xxx
