Hi All

I'm nearly 2 years post op having lost 6 1/2 stone. I've been having a pain on my left side under the ribs. I thought it was wind, so have went through windeze, wind relief gel tabs, mint tea - basically you name it and I've tried it. Nothing it shifting it. It comes and goes though. I've also had a bit of nausea.

So what I was wondering was, what are the symptoms of gallstones?? What else could this be or could you recommend something to try.

Many thanks for reading

I have had gallstones for a few years now. Mine feels like a band of pain around my ribs and top of my stomach (just under the level of the sternum)

I also get pain radiating into my chest and up my back and feel nauseous.

I feel peppermint tea and ibuprofen helps me most (many say ibuprofen doesnt help and makes it worse, but I am the opposite) sometimes I have to have buscopan too.

Good luck xxx

Hiya!

Sorry you are experiencing this pain .

I am not a doctor- but I have had gallstones and a gallbladder removal.

Here are the symptoms I had:

Deep pain on left under ribs
Pain radiated round to my back ouch!!!
Hard to breathe
Sweating
Nausea --- if I was able to wretch a bit--- it would temporarily ease
A pain you cannot ignore
Onset after eating higher fat foods

Don't wait too long to get it checked!! Xx

As gallbladder is on right side thats usually where pain begins however it can radiate around the back to left (mine felt like someone was turning a knife in my back) go to GP who can check bloods for liver function.
Another thing it can be is inflammation in stomach or irritable bowel as large bowel crosses abdomen just around navel area.

Thanks for your replies. Going on what you've said I don't think it's gallbladder. No matter what I eat I'm getting like a tightening grip/pain in between my ribs and mostly to the left side. I had about 2 oven chips pinched from my sons plate and I could feel the grumbling starting.

I'll keep an eye on it, maybe it's a bug!!

Thanks again x

Recently had my gallbladder removed, pain was on my right said, a really bad attack would cause pain up over my shoulder and down my back too. I had 30-35 stones removed along with the gall bladder - get it checked out, a scan is all you need to confirm it.

Hi. So sorry to hear you are having pain.

I am recovering from an infection in my gallbladder - been in hospital for 4 days.

The pain was the worst I have ever felt (consultant said some women say its worse than childbirth?). It was severe, across the chest under the ribcage and radiated throughout the chest and through to the back. And it just "sat there" - didn't move, nothing relieved it. For hours and hours. Shortness of breath, nausea, and yes, I also felt a little relief if I retched. Yeuch

After each attack, when the pain receded somewhat, I was left with a very tender area on the right hand side of the sternum just under the rib cage.

Bloods at the surgery found irregularities in liver function and I ended up in hospital. Had scan, found no stones, but evidence of infection.

I was really worried about pancreatitis and gastritis and am sort of relieved it was my gallbladder. I hope the pain never comes back :(

I hope this helps a little - I would get it checked out at the surgery and they will probably do bloods to check you out.

Years ago, I had suspected stomach lining erosion which presented as a deep, sharp, gnawing pain on the left hand side, below the rib cage, whenever I ate anything - I got some relief during the attacks from pressing gently but firmly on the area with my hand/fist. No idea how or why that helped, but it seemed to at the time. This was treated with medication for 8 weeks to cut the amount of acid in my stomach.

I hope you feel better soon xx :)

I have been really interested to read this post as I am currently waiting for a phonecall from my surgeon. I have had two episodes of excruiating pain lasting hours and whoever said its worse than childbirth I agree. Mostly on the right hand side although at times feels like someone is tightening my bra strap until it won't go anymore. Yesterday pain lasted over six hours, I almost went to A and E but it did gradually settle. Today I feel washed out and right side is tender. Does sound similar symptoms to what people have been describing ... thanks

It does sound similar to the pain I use to have. I had my gallbladder removed 4 years ago. The pain used to start in my right side and then would radiate all round my middle like someone was gripping me hard and squeezing. Nothing eased the pain if left, I began to recognise the onset of an attack and could ease it with diclofenac and ibuprofen if caught early enough, if Ididn't i would writhing around on the floor trying to find some confortable position to be in (I looked very strange!) The only way to find out is an ultrasound or Ct scan. My GP first diagnosed IBS, which is one reason I'm here now, but that's another story that one day soon I will write down here in a diary.
Good luck and get it checked out.

Oh I forgotr Lecithin from the health food shop did help for a couple of years.

I agree the pain can be really bad. I ended up going yellow with really dark wee and really high liver profiles. I ended up really poorly and having emergency surgery. The surgeon could not believe i left it for so long but i like you kept thinking it was something else I also ended up with pancreatitis and kidney problems so get it checked out. Better safe than sorry sweetie x
