First day back home after Bypass and I've got dreadful diahorea!! My partner bought full fat milk (urgh) and I had a mug of horlicks and some soup.....been on the toilet every since. Is this due to high fat?!

I think you have answered your own question hun

Too much fat Also was it light horlicks and did you make it with the milk?

Meant to add that you need to watch the sugar content in horlicks/ovaltine light or not...I just get away with the ovaltine light at half strength but I daren't add any milk to it or it knocks me for six.

Stickto tea coffee n water fr the moment and see hoiw that goes, some people do have diahorrea after the anaesthetic as well but lot more get constipated. Just take it easy water is ya best option, peppermint tea is nice can have it hot or cool or cold so doesn't matter how long it takes to drink it. Concentrate on getting your puree and water in plenty time for the other when you on the next stages. x

Fit and fantastic!
I'm 4.5months post bypass. The only thing of that type I was allowed after the op was Options hot choc. My provider's routine for the first two weeks after was 125ml of liquid every hour sipped over 10-15 mins, for 16hrs a day. Simple fluids - water, tea, coffee, semi-skimmed, NAS squash, very diluted fruit juice, Options hot choc, Heinz Cream of Tom soup (the chilli one was the best), smooth Muller Light (towards end of second week I added a spoonful of sieved stewed fruit made with a tiny amount of Canderel). Nothing pureed or with any kind of lumps etc until week 3.

As Frankie has said, it sounds like you dumped - this happens when we eat fats or sugars, and can also happen if we drink too much liquid too fast. Everyone is different with what % sugar they can cope with, and in time lots of us seem to be able to tolerate more. Ideally we should be looking at products with less than 5g per 100g (ie 5%). In real terms, for example, an Activia 0% fat yog is around 14% sugar, nearly three times the max we should have, especially in the early days.

I am excited for you, and am delighted to have made room for you on the losers' bench. Good luck. Trial and error for the first three months. I found it extremely challenging (esp the transition back on to solid foods), but am out the other side eating a wide range of normal foods just not much of them. i've lost 5stone in as many months (22/24 to 16/18). Good luck - you'll be fine xx

That's really good advice, thank you! I was able to have carrot and coriander soup this evening with just a tiny amount of explosion :). I think this must have been the amount rather than fat/sugar content. I'm def going to make my own soup!

How do you know you are full? I'm not getting a sensation of fullness.....but I do get wind and start burping!

I'm making sure I don't choose anything with more than 5g fat or sugar. Does anyone drink semi-skimmed milk for protein?

Blimey loads to learn, you guys are amazeballs! X

Yeah, burping and wind in the other direction go hand in hand with the gurgling. My system sounded like a drain for the first couple of months ... It has quietened considerably now. The question you have about restriction will really answer itself in a few weeks when you start the transition back to solid foods. I wouldn't be too concerned just now ... It will come, mark my words. Keep going, you are doing great xxx

Thanks hun. It just happens - honestly! Yes, it is exciting - tho I did have a clothes panic situation when I got my winter threads out of store. They are now distributed amongst the local charity shops as I looked (and felt!) like I was a small child wearing my big sister's wardrobe . Any excuse to hit the shops, and the internet. My house is like a parcel depot xxx

My place is like a parcel depot too!! The good thing for me; I've been buying clothes that don't fit for YEARS!! I now have a wardrobe full of brand new winter clothes ranging from size 24-30 which I found in the loft!! That should keep me going until spring and then fingers crossed, I will find some summer clothes 20-24!!!! Hoping to get into a size 18 by autumn next year, then the spending shall commence!! xxx

It is strange at first with food especially on the puree diet, 1 tin of big soup chicken n veg would do me 3-4 portions in the first few weeks, 1 plastic pot of custard would be 2-3 portions. 1 teaspoon of veg but 2 different veg and think woteva portion of meat pureed usually chicken or beef for me it was with gravy was really good and to make it tast used to add mint sauce or bit of stuffing if it was pork apple sauce. You soon get used to portion sizes after the 1st couple of weeks. You get a lot more restriction once you get on the next stage. Even now 2 yrs out my meal is on a tea plate and even then sometimes I have to leave some. If you have a chicken breast you will find when you are on solids that is you will not eat much else by the time you have eaten it. Believe me you will know if you eta too much it is like a brick stuck some people are sick, I never was bit felt queasy for a long while. What makes one person dump might not another, however what makes you dump personally may not 3 weeks down the line, it is a big learning curve. I lived with my diet sheet for the 1st few weeks, but making your own with fresh produce is by far the best option you know then exactly what is in it. I could not tolerate fish very well no matter how little I had it used to stick and felt like it was wedged there for hours. If it gets to that point and you don't be sick then after the half hour is up have a warm cup of tea that helps push it through. My tummy still sounds like a gurgling sink. Best of luck and just think you will be able to have ya Christmas dinner but remember think small cos sometimes if there istoo much on my plate I feel sick before I start. Eat protein 1st once over the puree stage, then veg carbs last. Protein is what we need most and water. Keep up the good work xx Cauli flower cheese is nice pureed amd also on the soft food stage. Used to use bisto cheese sauce granules xxx

Yep! 'fraid so. That's the nature of it. But it is temporary. Just think of the amount of swelling there is inside! And the massive shock to our digestive system the op has caused. It is bound to 'rebel' in the early stages, coupled with a stomach with the capacity of an egg, made smaller by all the swelling around it. Two thirds of a tea-cup of simple fluid every hour - not a portion bigger than that.

When you say "nearly a week post-op ...", I would say "only a week post op". When necessary, I say to everyone on here that the challenges of the pre-op LSD are NOTHING compared to the first few weeks post-op (in my experience). The purposes of the surgery is to live on as little food as necessary for the rest of our lives .. It is amazing how little we need to lead a perfectly active life - I do two advanced aquafit classes and a zumba class every week. Yesterday I had two cups of coffee and a scone all day, and did not pass out at zumba in the evening. I had my main meal after.

The simple limited fluids stage in the first couple of weeks post-op is to let your system recover from all the cutting and stitching. And for the body to re-adjust to life without more fuel than it needs and to use up some of the 'stock' we have accumulated leading us to require surgical intervention. Also to adjust our way of thinking re portions and choices. There is no negotiation with the bypass.

TBH - where you are now should be just the plain fluids. You will start to move to purees shortly. I know it seems never-ending but you will be amazed how quickly things will move once you start on solids albeit minimum lumps and purees. Keep going - you are doing great. Old habits die hard. But there is a future of liberation and increased good health ahead of you. xxx

That is exactly what I needed to hear. Don't get me wrong, I'm so happy about the surgery and hopeful for my future.....but this is a struggle and like you say, my head keeps telling me I can't survive on water and tea!!

Ok, positive head back on! Thanks so much xxx

Ceecie - in my opinion based on personal experience, nobody should underestimate the challenge of the first couple of weeks post-op, not least ourselves!

Honestly, I am so thinking of you and it is bringing all the emotions back to me. Hang on in there - you're one week down, so realistically just over a month to go before the next challenge presents itself - trying to swallow solids! I'll be there for you, and have everything crossed you cope ok. Every time I ate, I had my head down the loo retching and drooling like a rabid dog for at least two weeks. Grim! But it's history now.

Listen hun, the way I look at it is that if I had a bad day coping, I knew I'd never have to live it again, and started each day fresh to see what it brought.

xx
