Help please :( Malnutrition!

Flickalicious

Bit of a weirdy! XD
Im almost a year out now and 27 weeks pregnant.

Ive just had my blood test results back (needed at the end of each trimester) and most of my levels are low. I've been told I'm malnourished and was prescribed special "bypass friendly" energy drinks. Took my first one, well half of one, just now and since I've been feeling like absolute crap. A proper instant dumping session!
- Nausea
- Sickness
- Diarrhoea
- Tightness in the troat
- Difficulty breathing
- Body pains
- Tiredness
- Feeling limp
- Exhaustion

Completely at a loss as to what to do now. These were supposed to help me and this has to be one of the worst dumps I've ever had.
Im worried, not so much for me but for my baby!

Can anyone please offer any help or advice from experience? :( xXx

Hi

You poor thing, thats all you need!

I can't offer any advice other than to get back to your GP urgently. I'm sure you know the baby will be taking everything it needs from you, so its you that needs the looking after.

Take care xx

u poor thing. I cant give any advice on the bipass (being banded monday). but im a mum of 3. 2 of my pregnancies were horrendus and I know how worrying it can be. as the above post said the baby shud be getting what he/she needs. my consaltant told me that babies act like 'parisites' ( not a nice thing to refer to a baby) but I totaly got what she meant. thwy will take what they need from u which can leave u feeling awful. can u tolirate just little but often? if eveything it low maybe they shud be thinking of admitting u for a drip to keep ur fluids up. r u under a consaltant, maybe ring them up asnd ask to see them. good luck and I hope it all works out and u manage to feel a bit better x

Thank you ladies. So far, baby is doing well, at my last scan (22 weeks) Growth was fine and nothing to worry about. I have an appointment with the consultant (maternity) next week to check things are still progressing well. I also have a dietitian appointment in a fortnight to check the bypass side of things. I'll definitely mention this to her when I see her.
Ive been told about the IV drips, hoping it doesn't get that far but I'll do anything if it means I stay well. I have a 3 year old too and he's full of beans. Can't be doing with a poorly pregnant Mum, poor thing! Especially this time of year as the weather is changing and he's indoors alot xXx

Firstly - are you maximising/taking your vitamins regularly?
Secondly - look into myprotein.com for some decent protein shakes - ensure shakes aren't appropriate for bypassers as they're too high in sugar. Your bariatric team would know this, but OB teams are probably not that aware. Thirdly - in the meantime, dilute them with milk and drink it in quarters over a few hours. That should minimise dumping.
Lastly, deep breath and then ring your bariatric team. You will be fine :)

Yes, taking all vitamins, changed them to pregnancy safe ones plus on additional iron as im anaemic.

I've tried protein shakes and I cannot stand the taste or texture. I would be sick just at the thought. I can't afford to pay to try lots of brands as I simply just don't have the money.

I took your advice and diluted a different flavour with milk and drank a small glass slowly. Currently dumping again and I feel terrible. Questioning why I put my body through this again today after yesterday. I just wanna curl up and it to all go away. I feel so poorly :'( Husband has work soon and ill be at home alone with my son. Don't know what to do :(

Forget shakes etc for the moment. What foods/drinks do you tolerate? You need a way to enrich the food you can eat. So full fat milk, butter, cheese things like that that mix. Think of the highest calorie foods you can eat. Also doubling your current dose of vits and minerals would not go a miss. I'm not a dietitian, but ive nursed malnourished pstients, and this is common practice.

Since being pregnant I've swapped all the 'light'/'extra light' options for the regular stuff. I have fruit yogurt every morning, some kind of cheese at lunch with crackers/breadsticks and fruit and have a meat or fish, veg and carb dinner. I've been having a naval orange with my iron tablets as a snack and sometimes having a packet of crisps and a naughty black jack chew bar or liquorice too (pregnancy craving!) Sounds like loads when I type it out but im obviously doing something wrong if I'm malnourished!

It doesn't sound like loads. How many meals do you have a day? If this was me flick i would be aiming for 6 or even 7 day. Also would be aiming to have at least a pint if whole milk a day. And mixing things like cheese and cream into your normal meals. How is your tolerance to fat? It can really be your friend here (remember it has 9 kcals per gram against 4 kcals for protein and carbs), it also is essential for absorption of many vitamins.

I have 3 meals a day plus the snacks and drink 4-5 cups of milky weak tea plus squash and the occasional (flat) fizzy drink. I sometimes have milk but not very often.

I'm not a fan of protein shakes, but they do taste nice frozen into lolly moulds. They taste like mini milks,
