How long did you take of work?

Trying to get a general census in regards to annual leave after a bypass.

I know some who have had bands went back to work quite quickly. I'm not telling anyone at work, so don't want to be away for months and have to answer 100 questions.

What did you guys do? Is 2/3 weeks enough?

Personally I'd say 2/3 weeks isn't enough but I know some have gone back around that time. I guess it depends on what type of job you do and how you're recovery goes.
I struggled quite a bit with dizziness and energy levels in the early weeks and need more like 4/5 weeks. Everyone is different :)

I had 3 weeks off and then 3 weeks restricted duties, I had a sleeve. Even if you just work in an office I would recommend 3 weeks off as I was tired when I went back.

I told only my team leader and manager that the surgeon recommended up to 8 weeks off and they agreed to that so I was lucky , if I worked in an office I might have gone back sooner but as I work with disabled adults it was the best thing for me
told my work mates 1 week before the WLS and that was away recovering for the 8 weeks

Hey
I think it depends on the type of job you have. I have an office based, call centre job. My surgeon signed me off for two weeks, at the end of the two weeks I found that I still had no energy so I went and got another week off.
Good luck!
Sam

I had my op on 10 th October and I'm still of until 24 jan because I've had a lot of problems not only with the after effects. But my osteoarthritis. So my advice is everyone is different you will need to take each week as it comes.

I've not even had my MDT yet, it's on Friday, but I just wanted to share something that I have learnt over the years. I was advised by a surgeon to always have a week in reserve, and not to go back as soon as you are feeling "ok". Have a week of doing more at home etc first, build your strength back up. You can abandon the ironing or hovering or whatever half way through, but from experience, if you are back at work, people forget and expect you to be just as you were.....

It really will depend on your job, but also on your own recovery. I had no complications, and recovered well. But the nature of the surgery is that you aren't just recovering from surgery, you are rapidly losing weight because your intake is minuscule in comparison to before. This can lead to a serious lack of energy. I suffered with very sudden drops in energy for 8 weeks post op. I work on a super busy acute stroke unit. Working 12.5 hours a day. In the end I had 11 weeks off, I made sure I was ready to go back. I didn't have another day off sick for year after that, so I think it was well worth it. I also told everyone about my surgery, and received nothing but support.

Yea your right, I'm going to have to play it week by week. Thanks

Yes I'm bypass, I wanted a sleeve but they advised against one, they thought they might not be able to do either and a band was offered but I declined that because of all the problems I've read about and the people on here who are now having or had second surgery. The decision was mine to make if no bypass wake me up :)

Ok, how you finding it?

I'm very tired all the time and I'm having problems with dumping bad and light. I can eat most foods and I am tolerating most but each day is different what I eat today might be different tomorrow and have a different effect. So each day is a learning curve. Most days I'm glad I had it done, but there are some days when I wonder what the hell ha I I done but these are now short lived .

Had my surgery 28th Oct and I'm still off. I had a bypass and I've had alot of problems following the surgery and they are still ongoing. I work in an office and to be honest I don't think I'll be returning anytime soon. I don't think the insurance would cover me after discussions with Occ health.

Everyone is different maybe book more leave than needed just in case. I know my workplace always allow you to cancel leave obviously I don't know if it's the same where you work :)

Hi

Sorry to hear of your complications. I hope you don't mind me asking, what complications have you had?

I've got horrendous pain when I eat and pain when I drink. I spent 1 week before xmas in hospital until the 23rd Dec and then I was admitted again the 29th Dec for 2 weeks for tests but they can't find anything wrong. Now I'm vomiting alot too. I couldn't even keep tablets down yesterday. :-(

Its made me weak and very tired obviously I'm not getting the nutrition I need but I feel the hospital and my consultant have just given up on me! I was only discharged last Fri and I feel I'm worse than ever now :-(

Good luck with your surgery! Xx

I had my bypass on the thursday, I was back to 12 hours shifts the following tuesday, but I work from home on the pc :)
