Hi all,

I know this has been posted loads of times, but I'm being lazy lol!

How many people are suffering with hair loss? And what can we do to help it?

I'm being moaned at for the amount of hair that's being found in the bathroom! lol.

Thanks as always x

Other than taking all the vitamins prescribed by your team.. Plus keeping your protein and fluid intake at a recomended level.. And being gentle on your hair (avoiding chemicals and heat..) there is not much else we can do. My hairloss started at 3.5months mark.. It was terrible and scary... Not sure if it slowed down or i just got used to it... But it doesnt seem to be as massive anymore.. (Of course there is still plenty falling out...) ;)

My hair loss is really bad and has me stressed to bits ... I feel like I must have lost 40% of my hair (luckily I had really thick hair to start with) but now it's very thin and I am so conscious of it. Every time I wash my hair ... Which is only twice a week I lose the amount shown in the picture. I also shed hair daily and leave handfuls all over the house after brushing it. My pillow on a morning is covered in hair. I'm 5 months out and the hair loss started about 2 months ago. I dread to think what I am going to look like in another couple of months if it continues to shed at this rate ?

As far as I'm aware, there is nothing we can do to prevent it from happening.

Hi you need to increase your protein. If you can't do it with food then use whey powder in either drink form or with protein bars I'm eating a bar a day gives 20 g and I'm using whey powder strawberry flavour also 20g, it taste discussing on its own but with juices it's quiet nice. Mine is not coming out as much as yours yet but info look like I've had the fog around my shoulders so I'm hoping the things I'm doing will work. Everyone I've spoken to and all the things I've read and on here all say the same important eat protein first increase protein. Hope that helps. :)

Hi hun,
Thanks for this. I take all my vitamins, but I'm not very good at protein and fluid intake.... will increase that!

It will get better! I lost a lot for first 6-8 months. Now it's fuller and thicker than ever. It is scary though x

I have mega thick hair and have always lost handfuls, I only noticed it getting worse at months 4-7 post op, its thicker than ever now but the new growth is curly!! My hair used ti be pretty straight lol

I have very fine hair and my biggest fear about this journey was hair loss. I eat at least 50-60g of protein a day and a biotin supplement from Holland and Barrett (1000 micrograms) and 13 weeks in so far so good though I'm aware it could start any time. I've also been advised to massage my scalp well (but gently!) to stimulate new hair growth. Definitely don't wash it every day and brush gently!

Have any of you been dying your hair while it was going through this 'shedding' stage?

I'm about to put a semi-permanent colour on and I'm VERY nervous it's going to increase the fall out ... ?

My hairdresser has stopped using bleach on my hair till this hair thinning issue is resolved. But I still have it coloured

I only used a 'castings' semi permanent colour and luckily my hair is still in tact ... Although I still lost the normal handful. Sadly my grey hair isn't as well covered as usual with it not being a permanent dye ... But I'm just grateful it didn't cause my loss to be even worse ?

Ive always had very fine hair since my teens and it's been falling out with ever shower and every time I brush it, I now own a wig as it's the only way I feel good about my hair. Otherwise I think I would shave off the remaining hair I have left and do a Sinead O' conner.

How far out are you skydreamer? How long has your hair loss been going on for? X

Having read peoples experiences of hair loss, I was panicking over this as I have a defunct thyroid, so already had hair loss and hair condition issues before adding to them with my wls. Anyway I discussed it with a decent hairdresser who suggested that I had my lovely long hair cut VERY short just before my op as it's easier to disguise any thinner bits. I took her advise and am glad I did. I lost loads to begin with, to the point that I had bald patches at each side at the front and general thinning all over, but unless you knew what you were looking at, the short hairstyle made it less noticeable to other people. I tried all the suggestions that people offer on here and other forums, but nothing worked. Then did a bit of research and discovered that taking extra iron BUT with added vitamin C which is needed to help the body to absorb the ferratin/iron works. I found a Boots own brand iron and vitamin c combination and it works brilliantly for me. Whatever you do, please don't stop washing it as I have known some do. Ask your hairdresser to show you a very simple scalp massage. It's very gentle, but helps to stimulate the blood flow to the scalp and therefore hair growth. Within a couple of weeks of using the iron combo, and the massage whenever I wash my hair, my hair loss had gone from leaving what at times looked like a fur coated shower tray to literally losing the odd one or two hairs. I don't actually lose as much now as I did pre- op. My bald and thin spots grew lovely soft baby hair and the weird thing is that what I lost was mainly my grey patches and as it's all grown back, I now have less grey hair than I had before my op.
I am now 9 months post op and haven't had any significant hair loss for well over 5 months, maybe longer. And I love my short hair, so much that I'm planning on keeping it.

That's great advice, I will certainly try the combined iron and vit C tablet. Were you still taking this alongside your normal iron tablet? X

Yes, I take loads of iron in various guises and my team are happy with the levels. I think the secret is to make sure you get the combined iron & vitamin C. I never knew that we need vitamin C to help our bodies absorb the iron. I hope that it works for you. X
