tmi but very hard black poo

SerenityValley

Happy in the meantime
Hi,

Apologies for being minging but today i had a bowel movement that consisted solely of marble sized lumps of hard black poo. They were black as tar, like hard plasticine, and very worrying.

I'll be in touch with my surgeon but has anyone else experienced this? Internet generally suggests internal bleeding but i can't find pictures that are a good frame of reference.

Wife thinks it can be iron combined with not drinking enough.

Thanks
Andy

Can't say I've experienced myself but definitely get in touch with your team and maybe give your GP a ring too. Unusual bowel movements can be a good indicator that something is up so best to be safe and get yourself checked out. Take care and let us know how you get on x

Always consult your team if worried Andy but if you are on iron supplements it could well be that.

I've fired off an email to my surgeon. I'm not convinced is iron. There is no smell and it was like malleable liquorice. I got a pic on one of them which if he wants to see.

Also can't see that it could be blood. Just doesn't look right.

Mines the same Serenity, and mine is due to the iron tablets. It happened to me before bypass also when I took iron.

If it's blood it would be more slippery and stinky, if it's small and hard that means constipation (large rabbit droppings?) So you need more fluid. Iron gives you black stools, if you really want to be grossed out Google "Bristol stool chart"

I have a sneaky feeling if I google that I will never be able to unsee the result.

As for rabbit droppings, had that a few times when on a diet with very little food going in, and not enough liquid.

I too am only guessing its iron tablets as changes in your stools happen when taking iron tablets

Thank you everyone, so much. Yes, my surgeon thinks it's just iron.

I'm def constipated as only been 3 times in 3.5 weeks. However, I've managed in last couple of days to get my intake over 2l, so I'm hopeful this will improve now.

Thanks again xXx

I take ducolax twice a week, that solves my constipation!!

I used to use dulcolax when doing lighter life. I'll try something gentler like senna first. Dulcolax was always painful and explosive for me.

Dennis oomphs it all through the system, stool softeners soften everything up to make them easier to pass, depends what you want but you might find senna harder to tolerate now you've had the op

Too funny :D
