I am pre-op bypass but had a band for 8 years. There are quite a number of threads about alcohol and surgeons do vary in their advice. Me personally. I found alcohol and weight loss were mutually exclusive so I stopped drinking years ago except other than special occasions. I am talking maybe twice a year. I notice that a number of people who struggle to lose also carry on drinking.

I do think you need to be careful with alcohol post bypass, whether it affects you or not, but most things in moderation are fine. This is my opinion based on what I know and what I have seen. YMMV.

Pre-op I was quite a big drinker, have not touched it since op. I agree with Chrissy about it not helping weight loss and there a few ladies on here that have been struggling because of their alcohol intake and the way it starts the munchies.

The other thing is that 4 double gins with slimline tonic is over 400 calories, that is half my food calories. Not worth it to me.

Just be careful that it doesn't creep up on you. I hardly drank at all pre op. It would take loads to feel giddy and then I'd usually end up with a hangover before the night was up. I'm now 2 years post bypass and over these last few months I've noticed my drinking has crept up. It affects me straightaway and I get a massive high from it. So much so that I'm drinking more than ever before. I started with 2 glasses of wine on a night out and now I tend to have a bottle. Not good, and so I'm starting to monitor myself. I want to always enjoy a social drink but am terrified it will become a problem in the future. I've downloaded the ap from drinkaware and log every drink I have now just to reassure myself and also pull myself up if I feel it's getting too heavy. There's been some significant research about alcoholism post bypass and two years seems to be a particularly risky time. Worth googling the research as it was stark enough for me to realise I needed to just keep a check on things if I want to make the most of this tool and not end up harming my health with alcohol.

im finding that the 2 drinks I have seem to get me tipsy faster than ever, plus I just don't have the space to drink pints like I use to do I also find myself if im not drinking a pre made drink pouring 1 large gin and just topping up with tonic during the night

Drinking is empty calories, gives you fatty liver syndrome, increases size of liver (not good with a band especially) piles on bloat around the middle etc etc. post surgery you have a smaller stomach, and alcohol gets absorbed through the stomach so hits you quicker, it's also highly addictive and I guess many of us have addictive traits in our personality otherwise we wouldn't have ate the way we did.... it's a mugs game really, but I'm just about to have a Pimms because the sun is shining, and had a beer last night with my miniscule curry. It's mad, we really should just ditch the booze, it sure would accelerate weight loss. I need a slap, all that money on surgery, all the stress and I am literally pouring calories with no nutritional value whatsoever down my neck...what's that all about?

Cant say exactly Siana, I can only speak for me and I know from long experience of me that I am perfectly capable of sabotaging anything good that happens to me. Knowing this about myself I find it easier to fight this sober. In 3 days time I will go under the surgeons knife for the second time, I am well aware there is a golden 6 months to a year when most of the weight is lost, why would I let myself sabotage that? That period of rapid weight loss wont come around again. It is a choice at the end of the day.

Good luck for Friday. You can message me if you have any questions about my surgery. Not sure the gastric bypass is the same as mgb but happy to share my experience if it helps.

I also don't calorie count tbh I only count saturated fat sugar and carbs and I always loose , calorie counting days have well gone , I ise a tea plate and protein fruit and veg always , don't eat processed foods like chips crisps basically crap , I know when I want a drink if I have gin and tonic there is no sugar and carbs in it well very little anyway and when I drink it I always remain to loose weight , I think we all still need a life and the odd drink , as along as its in moderation it's ok? I don't and won't ever eat rubbish again like biscuits and cake chocolate I haven't wanted sweet stuff since Christmas which is good for me , I'd rather have a thin rice cracker with a good low fat cheese spread or protein yogurts / drinks

Im a year and a half out now and was on holiday last week. I had one pina colada and i drank less than half of it. Was never a big drinker anyway but a couple of sips on rare occasions does me now
