Might be a stupid question but it wasnt clear on the leaflets.

are we allowed protein shakes in the liquid stage or is it mostly just clear liquids post op?

Hi Sarah,

I would go with clear liquids. Some protein shakes may expand in the stomach slightly so I would err on the side of caution just so early!x

Thanks guys. yeah ill have to get clarification but for the meantime il prepare to just think about clear liquuids

xx

I was only only clear liquids for the first day. The rest of the two weeks soups, milk, yogurt ,protein shakes all fine.

Hi protein shakes might be to heavy for you in the first week be aware of slim fast it can make you dump because of the high sugar in it. You can have any liquid that will go up a straw that's the golden rule. Soups just sieve, milk, milk mixed with yogurt, tea, coffee, Bovril, tomato juice, veg juices all as long as it goes up a normal size straw with no bits. The other golden rule is don't rush your intake, slow and steady but make sure you increase your liquids every day so you don't become dehydrated. Hope that's helpful. :)

Dumping is much less likely after a sleeve gastrectomy, as you still have a stomach, albeit a smaller one, to absorb sugars before passing into your intestine.

Dumping syndrome occurs most commonly in gastric bypass patients, as they no longer have a stomach, so sugars flush straight into the intestines causing hyperglycaemia, which triggers a rush of insulin and subsequent low blood sugar, or hypoglycaemia.

Regardless, if you get it, it's not fun.

I was on slim fast and chocolate milk along with water. Just take it slowly the main thing is to remain hydrated. Good luck with your recovery.
