First week post op questions

Hi all, so I had my sleeve op on Thursday. I'm nearly off the pain killers and have rapidly improved over the last few days. I have a few questions though if any of you experienced guys can help?
I am only managing about 200kcals and 30g of protein so far, really struggling to get the fluids down. Is this normal?
I've got a rather nasty bout of thrush I think - is this common post op and can I take a tablet for it?
How long were you told to inject the anti coagelent for? My dr has told me 28 days!
Thanks in anticipation... My mum went back tonight and my mind has been racing overtime with issues!! X

Hi ju ju
I had my sleeve on 21st January think the fluids will just gradually increase mine did I didn't get thrush but think I would opt for a pessary and cream as bit early take oral tablets and I only had to inject for seven days hope this helps good luck Xx

Hi there. Your calorie and protein intake sounds similar to mine soon after the op. It's less than ideal, but I managed to have a bit more every day. It wasn't til I got on solid food again that my intake has levelled out at about 800 cals and 60g protein a day. I was told to do the anticoagulant injections for 28 days so this might be another one of those things that varies depending on your doctor.

Follow your doctor's instructions as there are different post-op procedures as the method of surgery varies from doctor to doctor.

Try warming your water a bit (slightly above room temperature, certainly not cooled) and take sips over time rather than gulps. You should be able to take more. As you're probably on liquids the 30 minute rule isn't important yet but it's good to start with it now. Don't worry - the recovery is fast and in a week you'll be thinking about other things, especially the rate the scales drop.

I injected for 7 days but longer seems a good preventative measure. I had milk, soup, gage yoghurt mixed with milk and slim fast at your stage, lots of protein in slim fast. Good luck

Thanks so much for your lovely responses, they're really reassuring. Don't worry, I'm doing everything to the letter - this is a major operation so there's no messing about! I'll try not to stress myself out too much about hitting my kcals/protein quite yet. I'm having the Upbeat protein drinks and they're really not too bad!

I had my sleeve on 26th Jan. In the first week I didn't get a huge amount of calories down me but from a week onwards they have gradually increased. I really struggled with fluids so I had sugar free squash and warmed it a little in the microwave, I found when it was cold it made my stomach spasm. I mainly had soups, protein powder drinks and soya yoghurt watered down a bit. I had seven days of injections altogether. This was the same when I had a caesarean 3 years ago. I wouldn't worry too much about calories and protein at this very early stage they will build up once you get onto purees and solids. Xx

i had the injections for 2 weeks and I could with a push mange an actimel a day and 1/4 pint of fluid in a day just sip sip sip and in time it gets more and after that you get to eat sloppy food....heaven ! its then I found the protein starts to go up
I wish you all good things in your recovery

Thank you, today was better, managed 1 and a half protein shakes and a couple of glasses of milk and a little milk too. Getting there! X

That's great juju. I'm starting my pre op on Monday. I'm dreading it. Glad all appears to be well. Have you had any other adverse reactions/ dumping etc?

As far as hunger/food went the Pre op was the worst bit but the knowledge it will help the op be safe is definitely worth it! And I did lose a stone too which helps too! It's a case of one day at a time. I've had no other side effects at all and today was my first day painkiller free. The worst bit was the 24hours after the op where they didn't really have my meds right for the pain and nausea but then my consultant came in and kicked their ass and it all got much better! It's worth it though, the weight is falling off and I'm not even hungry! What kind of op are you having? X

Don't worry too much about the first few days. The body has its way of finding what's right and for most people things get working nicely after a couple of weeks. You're entering the honeymoon period - enjoy it!

Hi juju. I'm having the sleeve. It's what I have thought was right for me all along but now I'm wondering should I have mgb. My consultant was happy to do either and I thought that because I have 4-5 stone to lose and it didn't affect my plumbing etc I would go with sleeve so many didn't have the dumping etc however I've stupidly started reading about sleeve "failures" where people gain lot of weight back again and that has scared me.
What did you have again?
I'm terrified go after. What are you eating at the mo etc? What's the advise you were given. Sorry for hijacking your thread. Are you feeling well?

with any WLS you can put the weight back on if you ignored the rules and start back on your own path, that's done to us largely and our own self determination and control.

Well I can tell you, I won't be overeating anytime soon! I'm doing really well, not on any pain killers, scars healing well and weight is dropping off. I've lost 25lbs since starting the pre op (over about 3 weeks) which is fantastic. My scars and my tummy ache a little sometimes but nothing dreadful.
The only problem currently is I'm struggling to get in the advised liquids and protein liquids as I feel very restricted when I swallow. This is getting gradually better every day but it is uncomfortable when I'm drinking. Apart from that, my sleeve is going really well. I won't lie, the first week is hard but you need to suck it up and get on with it. I know it's just a tool though and I'll still have to make good choices in the future x

Juju just keep sipping..all day from waking to bed! Even now i spend my day eating then concentrating on fluids. Im lucky to get in 1.5 litres of liquid a day even at 18 months.
As you heal you will know how much restriction you will have, or not depending on your sleeve.

Regards weight gain, its totally down to your attitude and willpower and working with your sleeve. Im still struggling not to lose more weight..im now just 96lbs with just over 6 stone lost in all. Ive never gained a single pound but its protein and rules for me. There are plenty of bypassers putting the weight on, and not getting to their target, if you want to cheat your surgery its very busy.
My mentality is it cost my 9k of our money so i cant let myself or my husband down. Whenever i get a little food demon voice i just think about that and it soons shuts the voice up!
My best advice is find the foods and quantities that suit you. I only eat soft food as trial and error with meat has led to many a painful experience!!
Good luck ladies, this surgery can change your life totally, it has mine, but you must keep focused and stay away from crap food!! X

So it's been a bit of a funny week so far - firstly one of my wounds came open on Monday so I went straight back to the hospital and they steri stripped it up. Today I've noticed there is green stuff coming through the steri strips and it's not smelling great. So I'm going back this evening for them to have another look at it.
I've also not lost any weight since Saturday and it's driving me mad. How can that be the case? Argh.

Only weigh once a week at this stage or it can be demoralising. Sounds like your wound is infected, your right to go back.

I'm four weeks post op and have stayed the same weight for a full week!!!! I suppose my body must be just getting used to things coz I did lose quite a bit during lrd and first three weeks, I have been told by others to have faith things will start to move again but it's hard I doubt myself all the time kinda feel like I must be doing something wrong or that the op isn't gonna work for me I sometimes even think did they do the op properly X

I'm a dreadful daily weigher so I guess I need to get in to the habit of doing it once a week. Yes, I was a bit unimpressed they said they couldn't see me until tonight considering I paid 10 grand for this operation. I don't fancy spending the day with an infected wound!
