Hi Everyone

Just adding my details to the new thread:

2nd Sept 08: Visited GP to request referral to Walsall Manor
23rd Oct 08: Appointment with Dr Heartland to discuss options
24th Dec 08: Letter confirming funding and added to waiting list
20th Feb 09: Attended first Pre Op appointment - bloods, swabs, ECG, blood pressure, breathing test and medical history with nurse.
3rd March 09: Appointment with Mr Youseff - all test results were fine.
9th March 09: Letter confirming op date for 17th April!

So I'm having an open Gastric Bypass on 17th April with Miss Heitmann and I start my pre op Milk diet on 3rd April. (Not long now!!)

I've been attending a WLS support group since last summer and have found it a great help. It’s in Solihull and is open to all. Takes place on the 1st Saturday of each month - if anyone wants the details just let me know.

I've read what feels like hundreds of books and medical reports and just want to get it done now as I'm struggling to concentrate on my 'real life'!!!

Always willing to offer help and support and look forward to sharing my experiences with you all

Hi Rach

Good luck with your counselling session. I've been to quite a few and there's really no need to be nervous. You might feel a bit awkward at first if anything, but you'll soon get in to them.

Mine really helped and I actually miss them now!! lol

Hi Sam

The support group is run by members of WLSinfo and is for both pre and post ops. All surgery types attend and family/friends are welcome. The group is free and it doesn't matter which hospital you're under.

It takes place on the first Saturday of each month at Spires Health Clinic, 1 Damson Parkway, Solihull B91 2PP between 2.30pm and 4.30pm.

Dont be scared Rach, Its a chance to get things off your chest and reason through your feelings without feeling daft. Your counsellor will help you understand why you are thinking and feeling certain things. DOnt worry about stuff pouring out or crying or anything. THey will have seen and heard it all before and if your counsellor is experienced they will help you structure the sessions so you can get the most out of them.

Hi Nikki! Congratulations on such a smooth passage from referral to op!! That's a change to what most people have, so I guess some of us might be a bit envious!!! Good luck for the op, we'll look forward to your news afterwards and how you're progressing.

Feels a bit indulgent posting the 'personal' stuff again, but here goes!

• Under North Staffs PCT
• Referred by GP in August
• Saw consultant, dietitian, clinical nurse specialist, surgeon in mid-November
• Hospital mislaid / lost / filed / shredded / ate my file so funding request not put through until something like end of Jan
• Received confirmation that I was on the waiting list and funding had been approved in Feb
• One week later advised funding had been withdrawn (must have slipped through the net!) as BMI wasn't 50 (was around 46 at hospital but generally around 47/48) - spoke to PCT who advised it was purely because of BMI
• Funding appeal put in for March individual funding panel
• This week advised by practice manager at GPs that PCT had asked them to get me weighed again asap and let them know straight away what my BMI is as if over 50 they would fund, if under, they wouldn't
• Went to medical centre yesterday and discovered to my horror and disappointment (but also secretly a bit happy) that BMI is in fact 50.6 / 131kg - scales must have gone bonkers having to weigh 20+ stones of chubbiness! Means I've put on about 8kg since November
• GPs called today to say that the PCT will now review my file in light of the revised information and IF I meet the criteria they will agree to fund, and will advise shortly...!
• Now trying to lose the weight I've put on and will be doing Slimfast or something to try to do this fast - no wonder my knees are hurting so much!

So that's me! I live in the Staffordshire Moorlands on the edge of the Peak District, and haven't met anyone else in my town who has had the op. I go to a support group at the BUPA hospital in Newcastle under Lyme, although this week I won't be because we are getting a new addition to the family tomorrow in the form of a gorgeous little puppy dog!!!
