    Ehlers Danlos Syndrome

Welcome to the club! Remember the only difference with a diagnosis is that it can be better managed and your medical experts can help improve the quality of your life.

My hospital bag list and what I really didn't need to take!

That's a good list. I'd also suggest a beach towel as the beds can get really uncomfortable with the plastic covers under the sheets (failing that ask the nurses for a couple of hospital towels). Also a Netflix subscription and headphones. Hospital beds can be painfully dull. I found I was...

    Ehlers Danlos Syndrome

The general advice for EDS is to avoid elective surgery. Another advice is to keep your weight down and be as fit as possible. With WLS it's a contradiction of the two. Just to clarify I was diagnosed with hypermobile type EDS after I had a gastric band. From what I can make out any type of...

    First week post op questions

I agree with him - there are plenty of dodgy operations abroad (and in the UK) but if you do your research you can find some of the best care abroad - much of it puts the NHS to shame. Where there are agencies making arrangements then research the named surgeon. Any decent surgeon has plenty of...

UK or abroad? Sleeve or band?

I've heard good things about Dr Chris. Personally I opted for Dr Dillemans as it was a more complicated procedure and he's a world leader with RNY. Dr Chris is more famous for MGB. From what I can make out it's comparing apples and pears - two very skilled surgeons.

    My journey starts today

I can advise you of the charity shops where I donated my old clothes from surgery in Ipswich - all male clothing but a t-shirts are reasonably unisex. I donated three months ago and I guess some will still be around. My trouser size has gone from 54"to 36", so I had wardrobes of unusable...

    Two weeks from surgery

I've replied on another thread. Please also take a look at my diary. I've been quite detailed on the highs and lows of the journey. https://www.wlsurgery.com/threads/my-journey-from-fat-bloke-to-bloke.157299/

    Surgery Abroad?

It all depends on how complicated the surgery is. I had a two stage conversion from band to bypass. The surgery after the band removal required me to stay in hospital for four nights and an additional three nights in Brugge before being allowed to return home. After the RNY (which went much more...

    Ehlers Danlos Syndrome

EDS can affect healing. There's currently research in progress (I don't know where but it was mentioned by one of the surgeons I spoke to) that gastric bands may be contraindicated to hypermobile patients due to increased risk of complications. However gastric sleeve/bypass is still an option...

    December 2014 Surgeries

I just weighed in under 200lbs for the first time. That means I've lost 161lbs so far and my weight is 199lbs now. I wonder if I'll get those numbers equal? 180lbs is a nice (less) round number and a BMI of just over 25. I'm at my target weight now, while a BMI of 25 would be nice I'm not...

    Help!!!!

You can just use egg whites. Some health outlets sell egg whites in a carton if you don't want to separate the yolks. Great for healthier pancakes (perhaps made with whey protein powder in place of flour).

    First week post op questions

Don't worry too much about the first few days. The body has its way of finding what's right and for most people things get working nicely after a couple of weeks. You're entering the honeymoon period - enjoy it!

    First week post op questions

Follow your doctor's instructions as there are different post-op procedures as the method of surgery varies from doctor to doctor. Try warming your water a bit (slightly above room temperature, certainly not cooled) and take sips over time rather than gulps. You should be able to take more. As...

    July 2014 Surgeries

Yeah. I was able to go out shopping the next day but had to rest frequently. It feels more uncomfortable than painful. I'll go back to work for a day this weekend but I'm still in my rest time.
