Anyone bumped back to GP by Salford Royal?

Chugging along
There seems to be a struggle btwn what hospital consultants want and what manchester pct EUR want in terms of process and in the meantime referrals (I believe from city of manchester) are being bumped backed to GPs. I undestand now there will be a meeting to iron out the problems which mean nothing is happening for 'patients' like me until this is sorted. I'm at the end of my rope but will tie a knot and hold on kicking and screaming.

Would love to hear from anyone else affected.

Hi plus cannot comment on the problem but wanted to say you keep hanging onto that rope you will get there one day...xx

My understanding is that yr Gp should apply for funding and that should be in place before being referred to dr new. This is what a friend was told by dr news secretary.

Thanks CG.

Is anyone else affected? Has any one else been told similiar? Does it make sense to anyone that this should be happening?

i think the problem lies in who pays for the pre op tests 24 hr urine collection, blood tests, sleep apnea, psycological evaluation, consultation if your funding is not approved. By ensuring that funding is in place they have all costs covered and are not left out of pocket if funding is refused.
Hope that makes sense. I was lucky as was one of the ones who fell into the new system before they had got their act together. Plus my dr hadnt refered me for surgery he had refered me for weight management. But they seem to have tightened up now.
Hope everything works out for you

This is also what I believed but am now being told different by the pct and my GP is also sticking to this (i.e we will apply for funding only when consultant gives his go ahead). Only problem is that the consultant will not see me unless i have funding). Can you see how I am caught between the devil and the deep blue sea. PCT woman say's manchester pct has set aside money with salford royal for patients to be seen there initially before applying for funding . Methinks the hospital is either not aware of this money or they've mislaid it or they never received it. I just don't know what the struggle is but I understand now there will be a meeting to sort out the mess. I am at least grateful for the acknowledgement that there is a mess to sort out. The specific problems seem to be with manchester pct specifically and not the other grt mcr pct's.

All I want right now is to know that something is happening whether it's seeing dr new's team before funding application or an acknowledgement that pct will take a funding application before referral and that it will be dealt with in a specified time frame. Is that too much to ask. Is it?

Oh yeah, this makes total sense. But why my pct won't see the sense is the real baffler. Hospital told me that with my stats, bmi of 56 wls is first option ahead of drugs ( pct criteria is unadulterated nice guidelines) and so the kind of first appointment the pct want is completely unnecessary especially if wls is what I really want. If i get funding first but later turn out to be unsuitable for surgery, the pct will keep the bulk of it's money and only cover the pre- assessments.

I too had a bmi in the 50's so automatically qualified for surgery.
good luck
keeping everything crossed for you.

Hi
Mine was pretty straight forward really, went to GP, went to dietician, bloods and urine, then Dr New who sent letter to my surgeon. One day I suddenly had a thought - have I even got funding? Rung up and was advised that I had - wooo! Then off to surgeon and a couple of weeks later my op. All in all the whole process took from beginning of December 07 to the end of July 08. Of course it all looks pretty simple written down like that but my emotions were all over the place and there was plenty of stop/start moments when I didn't think it would ever happen.
All I can suggest is keep talking to people and ask them to explain whats happening. I found the guys at Salford really helpful, especially Dr New who I have nothing but good things to say about.
xx
