Hi All,

I’m on the waiting list at Chelsea and Westminster for a bypass, so far I have seen a dietician and the nurse specialist. I have severe acid reflux, large hiatal hernia (being seen at KCH) and a bmi of 41. The bypass would treat the reflux.

Chelsea and Westminster aren’t prepared to move me any faster so it’s around 18 months.

I’ve spoken to my Gastro consultant who agrees that because I’m on 4 lots of medication a day 18months does seem overdue.

He has referred me to his colleague Dr Chang a bariatric doctor at Kings College he has said he would put me through as a priority but it can still be a while.

Does anyone have any experience/advice to share?

Hi and welcome, sorry I can't help you with this, but just wanted to welcome you to the forum, hopefully someone else may be able to help you.

Welcome Honeydipdap. I am nearly a year post bypass at Luton hospital and also had a hernia which they found at surgery and fixed. I have lost 7 and a half stone and it is the best thing I have ever done. I hope you don’t have to wait too long xx

Hiya, I can’t offer any help as I was bypassed at Luton and Dunstable, I’d be interested to follow how you get on, I had a hernia and suffered with reflux too but still had a 22 month wait from first appointment to surgery. I would imagine you will be advised to have a bypass rather than a sleeve due to the reflux as a sleeve can make reflux worse and your hernia will probably be repaired during wls as most of us who had a hernia had it repaired at the same time.
Good luck I hope things move quickly for you, if not time really does go quickly and it’s a great time to research research research absolutely all you can regarding wls and change it will make to your diet/lifestyle for life xx

Thanks so much everyone.

I don’t know if I’m being selfish but the fact sometimes I can’t sit up due to the reflux, been admitted to A&E several times and given meds through drip and injection. It’s so much more than the weight loss at the moment and it just feels so unfair. I clearly understand that there are many many people worse off than me health wise who are priority but at the same time 18months is so long to be in pain and feel shame whilst looking in the mirror!

Rant over.

Again thanks so much for your replies. Love reading your posts.

Hi and welcome sorry I can’t help but keep posting. Will look forward to seeing your journey xx
