Post op fluids and multi vits/mins

Phojay

middle name OPTIMISTIC!!!
Hi all,

I've been told to have water, squash, milk, consomme or oxo drink for 1st 2 weeks. just wondered what everyone else drank in the 1st couple weeks post bypass?

Also, I bought a pill crusher to crush my high strength vits/mins so could take them in water but bariatric nurse thinks should only take childrens mutivits for now? When I compared them they were a fraction of the contents of the ones I had bought.....do you think I could take 2 of the childs ones to get a higher level in?

Many thanks in advance to all you knowledgeable people!!!

I had the family chewable jelly vits for the first 6 weeks and have just started on the forceval vitamins today and considering its siaze it went down surprisingly well. I would just take one of the chewable one as instructed and ask again at your first post op review. I thin that in the short term they are ok to take but not as long term regular vitamin.

I was told by my consultant not to worry to much about vits for the first 4-6 weeks as it wouldn't make a lot of difference, though i'd always follow the advice of your consultant in this case.

Fluids stage - basically you can have anything clear you can suck through a straw ! that means clear soups and fluids with no bits or herbs in ! Its an important stage as you need this few weeks to allow the wounds to heal properly and things to settle down inside.

Yes you can have milk. I was told I could have fluids once they are passed through a seive - not liquidized as it gets rid of pips/seeds etc. I was told I could have tinned soup but watered down and I was told I could thin it with milk. SS is right - listen to your team and follow their instructions. We are all told different things!! x x

Yeah milks ok, in fact its full of protein so good for you.

Fluids - anything thin, clear or that you can suck through a straw.

I did milk shakes, thin yougurts, soups lots of tea and coffee etc.

At my pre op this week the nurse told me to get forceval form my doc, and to start taking it before the op:confused:She also said I could take all my other meds right after my op:rolleyes:I can't see how i'm gonna be able to swallow them in new pouch :confused:

You'll be fine, the technique if you have to take drugs is to either get them in liquid form or crush then into a powder and mix into a little yoghurt, you may want to check though that the drugs you have to take now are ok once you malabsorb as i'm aware some drugs dont work as well post op !

Also forgot to suggest jelly earlier - you can have jelly to as it turns to liquid in your mouth and on the way down and is very soft, though go very slowly with it till you know how much you can take, i had a big bowl of jelly in hospital the day after my surgery over ate and experienced my first taste of restriction lol :D
