Hiya, this is my first post, gulp, I went to see my GP about surgical "help", she knew absolutely nothing about the process told me to make another appointment and she would get some info, which I did. She has told me that there is a minimum and a maximum BMI for the surgery at Sunderland (I cannot find any mention of a maximum) my BMI is currently around 55, also there is a load of hoops to jump through so I have to do all of them before she refers me, is this right? Anyone else from Sunderland's catchment heard of this or has she got it all wrong?:wave_cry:

Update, been back to the GP she is referring me to the Surgeon AND applying for funding at the same time. Well here goes....

Hi lesley, i was banded my mr small at sunderland, hoops to jump ? ive never heard of that, as she should refere you and the surgeon ect makes the decicion if your suitable for surgery, the only thing i know about on the gp side of things is that you have to have tried all other diets and prescibed slimming pills b4 a referal.

My old GP prescribed some tablets, but when I checked them out it was for people on high fat diets, I don't have a fatty diet only one that makes me fat! so I didn't take them, my new one is on about some other pills that inhibit your appetite but have so many side effects it terrifies the life out of me.

I can not see the point, not when I have volunteered to seek help for a permanent solution, I have proved I can loose the weight, just not keep the stuff off!

if she does do a referal you will prob have to go to a group session 1st, that seems the normal 4 s/land now

Hi lesley
It does seem that each PCT does it differently.
My PCT (Redcar & Cleveland) has a Specialist Weight Management Service and GP's here have to refer you to this first and its this service that then refers you for surgery. From there our PCT buys the surgery from Sunderland. If your PCT doesn't have the SWM service then i would assume that its just up to your GP to do a direct referral. I appreciate that you may be worried about the medications, and quite rightly as some have such horrid side effects, but please don't close your mind off to them totally as they can be a very useful tool in working your way towards surgery (i have been on xenical & acomplia)
Let us know how you get on
Jayne

HI! I live in Durham but will have to go to Sunderland for surgery. I first went to see the Doctor about six months ago and was prescribed Xenecal which was such a waste of time. After that, had to go and see the Dietician - again, not good for me, (though I appreciate that some people find this really helpful). The doc described these things as the 'hoops that needed to be jumped through' in order to be considered for WLS and to meet the NICE guidelines.
I went to see him just over two weeks ago and he said he'd refer me to the hospital, (I'm presuming I'll see the same person as you) but I've not heard anything yet.
Please will you keep in touch and let me know what's happening with you? My email is mark dot fay at tesco dot net. I've just written it like that incase the website blocks email addresses... sorry, I probs look like a right nit now.
Anyway - good luck. Let me know how you're getting on as we're both in the same boat and may be able to support each other.
Love
Fay

i got all excited today when i got an envelope from Sunderland, thinking it was my second appointment. Unfortunately it was just a copy of the letter they have sent to my GP :(
nice that they keep us in the loop though i suppose !

Hi Lesley, I was referred last year(october)by my doctor for WLS. Tried all the WL Pills, didnt work(obviously). I have a BMI of 49. My first appointment was in December at Sunderland. It was a group session with Mr Small. I then recieved a letter in January thinking it was another appointment but it was just a copy that Sunderland had sent to my GP. Anyway I got another appointment last week to go to Ryhope hospital in Sunerland in March. I hope some of this is of some use. Good luck and fingers crossed.
