Article in Woman magazine

Fame at last!!!! I have had an article done on me, my weight problem and decision to have gastric bypass in this week Womans magazine. When I was asked, I was happy to do it because I really am very enthusiastic about getting the message out that being overweight/obese/fat is attributed to a whole variety of reasons. For me in particular and many alike it was genetics, carb addiction, compulsive and emotional eating and I might as well be honest I do love food, all sorts of food. I feel very passionately about dispelling the myths that all 'fat' people are lazy, good for nothing, sloth like, greedy people. We have an addiction, an illness in the same way heroine addicts or alcoholics do. They get better support, funding help and sympathy from the medical profession and the media because its openly recognised they need specialist help. We have an eating disorder in the same way anorexic or bulemic patients do, and whilst their illness is very sad they so far get a hell of a lot more sympathy and efforts to treat them than us overeaters do. I truly feel that being fat is the only remaining minority group (although there are plenty of us) who can still be openly ridiculed and abused. People wouldnt dream of publicly making fun of a black/Asian/blind/disabled/gay/old/skinny/bald etc.... person but hey see a person who is overweight and the laughs, sniggers, comments are a plenty.
Right I've had my rant!!!

fab post claire. Agree with you wholeheartedly.

will have to nip shop and buy mag for a read

My mum was saying yesterday there was something on tv asking people on the streets if overweight people should have surgery to loose weight, and some said why should the tax payer folk out well I have paid my taxes since 1984 so they can on there bike. They may aswell say people with lung cancer shouldnt have treatment cause they smoke or people with liver probs shouldnt cause they drink

wow well done cant wait to read it
can i borrow you when al my "friends" have a go about me having the band
xx

That is fab about the magazine. I was approached a couple of months ago by a journalist who wanted to do a story. Who interviewed you? I will definately have to get a copy of your article.

Congrats,
Nic;)

Well done!! Like you say there is not enough people recognise that you can have a genuine problem with overeating which can and does cause many other problems, there are too many just think that all you do is sit and eat and dont realise that there is often issues as to why. If you drink or smoke there is always some support group or other but for us that are overweight it is just a case of "well stop eating and you will lose weight" if only it was that easy. Before my surgery I was constantly at the doctors and was taking around 20 tablets a day I am now taking 7 I no longer take medication for my diabetes so surely in not too much time the cost of my surgery will have been recouped in reduced medication costs alone.
Right rant over.
Well done again look forward to reading it. xx

I'll be buying it today hun.well done on making some great points:D:D:D

Fabby article Claire :) you'll have to let us know when the follow ups run, cos I don't buy it every week.

That is great, glad someone is happy to stand up for the overweight population. I will have to buy it and have a read. Well done it must have took guts. Take care R x

Having read it, although its not awful, it doesnt really hit the points I made earlier in this thread that I had wanted to get across. Its really just the 'how i got so big' story. It was a telephone interview and spoke for over half an hour. I guess they have had to edit it loads coz there is only a limited amount of space for the article. Oh well, at least I shared my views, thoughts and opinions with you guys and you all know and understand what I mean. Just wanted the non fatties who scoff to be a bit more insightful, respectful and understanding!!

Want to go and buy it now, fantastic words of encouragement for people awaiting a date, I feel like Im waiting for my life to begin, Im stuck in limbo land!
