Hi everyone I have my pre-op consultation tonight (privately paying) for a gastric bypass on 28th September.

I'm really thinking I've made a mistake and should have gone for band - I'm 35 years old and need to loose 6 stone (15st 10lb - 5ft 4).

Can you give me any info, i.e whats the op like, recovery time, can you eat normally straight away etc.

I want to go armed with info as dc is keener on bypasses but only have my lunch break before I go for my appt at 5.45pm!!

Please help!

I had a bypass and life is sooo good 7st lighter and Im 57!
You dont eat normally for quite a while but thats the time you shift the fat!I would say go for the bypass and do everything they tell you and in 6 months time you will be size 12 and a very happy bunny! Its not a breeze be prepared for hating once loved food, vomiting when food gets stuck, dumping if it affects you, chucking tons of clothes out and having a credit card bill as long as your arm for all the trendy new stuff, complements galour and a whole new life.Maz x

Was the choice only bypass or band, what about sleeve? I am pre op, so cannot offer any practical experience, only opinions based on my research. I would have thought bypass a bit drastic with the amount of weight you need to lose, given the greater surgical risks and malabsorbtion. Band dosen't appeal to me with all the fills/defills, port issues, risk of band erosion etc. Sleeve seems like a happy medium to me, smaller op than bypass and immediate restriction. Did your surgeon say why he thought bypass was better for you? Good luck with whatever you do.

Thanks ladies, he thought bypass due to the food I eat (everything including sweets - big portions and grazing). He said that band would have honeymoon period but then would probably put weight back on again - apparently he does lots of conversions from bands to bypasses. Im frightened of the operation, malabsorption etc. ARRRGGH. I already cancelled it once a week before! Sorry I'm manic at the moment!

The band is the less invasive surgery, however it was right for me.
I think on here we all went with our gut feeling, a band can be un filled but a bypass is for life well this is what I was told?? Good luck I'm sure what you go for will work for you.xxx

I'm the same as you and they told me the band.

I think everywhere you go will have a different opinion xx

Good luck xxx

I went for a bypass because I know that a band wouldn't have worked for me. Why would I want a de-fill so that a band wont work, I don't want to regain my fat. A bypass is for life and I want to be slim and healthy for life so suits me fine. If you eat a good healthy diet, plenty of protein, some carbs and veg etc. and take a couple of vitamins, iron and a calcium tablet each day there is no problem with the absorption thing. I'm the healthiest I've been for 30 years now since my op last November and I wouldn't change a thing.

As well as all the brilliant success stories I've heard about bands I have also heard lots of stories of failure too with people being able to cheat their bands and people having de-fills when they go on holiday etc. I love the fact that I can't eat very high fat and sugary foods, neither of which are healthy anyway. With a bypass you start losing straight away too, with a band you have to have fills to find the right level of restriction for you. I just couldn't be faffing around having to make appointments and traveling to and from hospital for fills all the time.

At the initial seminar at St. Georges, Tooting that I went to we were also told that a band only lasts for 10 years before it has to be removed and changed for a new one which is something to consider too.

When I go out for dinner, which is at least once a week, I eat the same food as my husband/friends, just a toddlers portion instead. Or I choose one of the lovely starters that are usually on offer. I enjoy a glass of wine and follow my meal with a coffee and I really don't feel any different from anyone else. I've never ever come across any problems in restaurants with them refusing to serve me just a starter or when there's good choice, a childrens meal. At carverys I always have a childrens meal which is the same but smaller and half the price.

I would say, as a bypasser, go with the bypass, I know I'm biased because that's what I had but the short term liquid, puree and soft food stages for 6-8 weeks are well worth being slim and healthy for the rest of your life.

I agree that your bank account will take a bit of a battering though. I absolutely love all the beautiful new clothes, knee high boots and gorgeous underwear I can now go to any shop and buy. I'd do it again and again, and my only regret is that I didn't do it 10 years ago.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

Im also pre op. i have my consultation app on thursday. I have stated i want the bypass over the sleeve and band, on the nurse specialist advice.

Im similar weight to you, smaller in height and have the same eating habits, i was advised that i would be able to continue to eat like i did before with the sleeve i.e. sweets and big portion sizes

Therefore the bypass was deemed most suitable which i agree with them.

Im at sunderland, and they informed me that they very rarely do the band anymore.

I have to say that I too would not go into any wls thinking 'oh well, I can always have it reversed'. Either you commit totally to the lifestyle change or you don't. Whatever operation you choose will fail if you don't, be it band, bypass or sleeve. And while its a good idea to discuss your concerns with the surgeon, just thinking about the number of people they've seen and the experience they have and ask yourself whether you know better than them. I fully support and believe in the band as the right wls for some, but from everything you've said it doesn't even seem as though you believe that.

To the original poster, you really need to discuss these concerns with the surgeon.

All we can tell you is what we had and why we think its the best option. This won't help 'you' make your decision.

Good luck and let us know how you get on xx

Hi ladies, firstly, thank you so much for your posts, I was in a complete panic. However, I went to my appointment and felt sooooo much better when I came out! I asked about baloons, bands etc and took his advice. He said if I had a baloon I'd put the weight back on when it came out, if I had a band I'd be back in a few years after the honeymoon period had finished asking to convert to a bypass. I'm really lucky as my dc is one of the leaders in WLS and is president of British Obesity & Metobolic Surgery Society so I can definitely trust what he tells me. Its funny though, just before posting this, I called one of hte online ads about a baloon and the telephonist told me that they never recommend GBS to anyone my age (35) due to malnutrition - I think that's what started me off!

I can't beleive im having surgery next Friday. I'm not going to lie, I'm scared stiff (of dying and regreting my decision). I've also been putting my family through hell with the "its on, its off" (I cancelled surgery on 17 August) and almost cancelled again after my wobble. My mum has told me in no uncertain terms that she can't cope with it anymore lol

Please god, let me survive and not regret my decision x

My personal opinion when I had my consultation was the band wasn't for me as I like things to be done and no further follow ups. I'm having a sleeve and kind of wish I was having a bypass. As it seems by what I have read to be a really good option.
