Sunderland WLS HELP

Hi
Just wondering if anyone can help me as my GP didnt really have that much info for me. i live in sunderland.

After years off trying to get the weight off, myself and GP have decided that WLS is the way to go. i have done loads of research before hand about the different types, pros and cons etc.

all i want to know if the process of what i will have to go through, to be honest all i got from my doctor was that he would refere me for the surgery.

Can someone tell me the process ........... do you really have to wait a year for the op.

thanks x

Hi
Didn't want to read and run. I'm not from your PCT area so i'm not sure if you have to do anything for them before you get referred to the surgery team (My PCT make you work with a specialist weight management team for about a year before they decide to approve funding and refer you)
There will be others along from your area shortly no doubt.
When i was "done" at Sunderland the process took about 12 months but demand has risen so sharply lately that i think its about 18 months now from beginning to end.
You will set off with a group seminar appointment and then two individual clinic appointments. At the third appointment if you have met the weight loss targets they have set you they will put you on the waiting list (currently approx 26 weeks)
I know the wait seems frustrating but it flies by and is worth it in the end.
Which surgery do you think you might ask for ?

hi there Jayne has pretty much covered the answers to your questions, its approx 18 months from seminar to surgery as the waiting list has gone up yet again as jayne says from 18 to 26 weeks at the final end of the process, our next support group meeting is on the 29th of this month if you would like to join us then ya very welcome x

hi, thanks for the replies. i was thinking of a gastric bypass. But on the other hand the gastric band is very tempting as i would be able to ajust it.

the only thing i am worried about is that i can lose weight quickly around 10pound in a week but i tend to lose a few stone and stick so i get down in the dumps and just put it all back on and more. so all am thinking is that if they see i can lose weight then they may not agree to surgery.

i would really like to come to the one of the meetings, do u have a set venue

x

i'd love to come............ in your experience do you think it would hurt if i started to lose weight now before i went to my first appointment, just GP has sent off weight and height, just well am not very lucky with things like this i couldnt win the lottery even if i had the winning numbers. i'll more than likely be turned down, i want to show them am serious x

bmi 1st appointment has to be 40 + with us or 35-39 with co morbilities to qualify, how much do you need to lose ?

i'm 322lbs and should really be 130 to be healthy x

As i had already worked with my weight management team from my area i had already lost some weight before my first appointment at the hospital.
Lose whatever you can because they will have your starting weight sent by your GP and its good to show commitment and reassures the consultant that your head is in the right place to embrace the changes you will need to make to your lifestyle. In your one to one appointments you get the opportunity to explain what your difficulties are with regard to maintaining weight loss, as well as working out where your weaknesses lie. This also helps you and the surgeon to decide which op will be best for you.
