will surgery stop some of my pain?

starr

very happy post opper
i just spent the week end in agony after going for a walk and looking round the shops then to the dog races ,great night with my family, but i realised how much pain and strain this extra weight is putting on my body ,at the moment its my hip and leg,,its agony, feels like im lifting concrete,,stops me from doing things i want to do,,,then its bottom of my back, another pain, then theres the pain from gallstones through to my back which i convince myself is something other than gall bladder pain!,, which drives me insane ,sick of moaning about hurting, when did i become this whingeing moaner? did many of you suffer these pains before the surgery? did the op make any these aches and pains any better,?,please say yes,cos as the song says ,drugs dont work,!(doc keeps giving diff painkillers ),and im so hoping the weight loss and gall bladder op will stop a lot of mine!, hope everyone has a lovely day ,looks like summers here at last,,(great!,now even more sweating to worry about ,roll on sept 28th..haha )xxx

I'm sorry to hear you not feeling very comfortable today....its a shame that when we want to do something nice with our family and friends that the following few days we pay for it...I personally get to the point I cant move ;(

But we're into Aug now, Yeah!! now we can say our ops next month!! How good does that sound;)

I'm sure post op these sort of trials will become a thing of the past and just a distant memory

Morning Starr, I suffer from fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis so yes pain is often my constant companion kept at bay with painkillers ish but exercise or any prolonged physical activity makes it worse. However since my surgery 4 wks ago I hardly take my pain killers and whilst I have yet to do as much as normal I did have a long day out last week with a fair bit of walking and only then did the usual points behind to ache a bit and no where near as much as usual. So in answer to you question yes at least so far fir me the pain is a lot less. Hope that gives you some hope for your pain levels once you are post op. Not much longer, keep the faith nearly there.

Hi everyone, I had my op seven weeks ago and I have to say pain is no longer my constant companion.

I suffered terribly from pain around my pelvis, left hip and buttock since the birth of my daughter nearly five years ago. I used to take regular pain killers and often needed to take a type of morphine.

I have been for long walks, boogied with my daughter and nothing, nada! Just an occasional ache. I have not taken one pain killer.

I hope you have the same experience with your pain post op, it truly is liberating.

Julie

such a good post
i too suffer from pain in my back, shoulders, hips and of course my knee which was due to an accident 8 months ago but its great to think that when i get my surgery things in that dept will ease as im fed up taking painkillers left right and centre

hi starr i had my gall bladder out approx 10 years ago it was fantastic as there was no pain anymore, then since ive lost nearly 4 stone since i started my journey ive hardly any pain in my back and knee which was really really bad, i remember the specialist saying for every 1 stone lost 10 stone of pressure is lifted from the affected joint xxxx

I had galbladder pains, but not anymore, mainly because the surgeon took it out at the same time he did my bypass lol, also use to get back pain, but not anymore, the 7 stone loss has made such a difference.

I wont lie to you, the operation isnt a cure for all your aches and pains, its an aid to help you lose weight, which in time will ease the pain you are suffering, then eventually you wont feel it again.

Hi Starr, when I used to walk around the shops or take the dogs for a walk, my lower back and hips used to ache and my ankles, I was always out of breath and had to sit down.

Now I can walk anywhere with no aches and pains and I don't get out of breath,

Believe me, when you have had your operation, you will feel like a new person and you so deserve it, Karen x

I hope it does for you Dawn, the two are normally linked and it becomes a viscous circle!

This time next year you will be feeling the cold due to weight loss rather than worrying about sweating x

feel much better now knowing most of you had pain to deal with before surgery , and sorry some still are suffering after ,,thanks everyone ,as always your all brilliant ,i always feel better when others know what im talking about ,anyone whos never had a weight issue cant understand how hard simple things are to do ,like hoovering or nipping to the shop ,my hubby is building a swimming pool but its not ready yet so he got me a big above ground one as a surprise ,and what a wonderful feeling ,,its 4ft deep .and heated ,so i can get loads of exercise ,i go in pools on holiday but never to a public pool, just get embarressed, so the weightless feeling is amazing ,my kids think im mad splashing in my paddling pool at my age ,but sod it , time to start doing what i want , and having fun, might get a trampoline next lol!and it really eased my back pain,i can see why so many people go swimming after the op , i know we all say it , but i dunno what id do with out you lot sometimes ,i know the op isnt a cure all,but looking at everyone post op ,its a move in the right direction, thats for sure! xxx

I had lower back pain and it would lock if I walked for too long.Hip pain and feet that were ready to give up!I have no back pain and anly slight hip ache if I walk a good distance,no headaches at all in nearly 6 months!!5 stone off has made a huge difference to my health.

Had dreadful gallstone pain years ago and thankfully had my gallbladder out in 2000 so that pain went.
Prior to my sleeve I was in agony daily for about 2 years with neck/back/foot pain and a numbness going down my leg that severely limited my ability to walk, repeat physio and masses of painkillers daily were the norm for me but now 6 months on I feel great and full of energy (can walk a mile easy) although I still may take an occasional painkiller for neck/shoulder pain if I have a busy day but nothing like the amount I took before.

Wow that is impressive and fantastic information, no wonder my knees feel better already!:)

Like many others here, pain was just part of life. Knees, back, ankles, hips. If it was a joint it hurt. I had Tramadol for the bad days. But that was then.

Now, these are a thing of the past. I have lost 8 stone, 6 1/2 before surgery and another 1 1/2 since. I can now walk and talk at the same time. The only joint that aches is a knee that lost its cap to a motorbike accident as a teenager. No pain killers, no powerful anti-inflamatories. Life is good

Look forwards to it. It makes the grief of the dieting and the milk dieting and the calorie counting and the surgery all worth while.

Enjoy your journey.

i love you lot! went to gp today to sort out pain relief and he said the same ,,,,get ready to be amazed, youl find youl wake up and think ,omg nothings hurting much today! , i so hope thats true ,thanks everyone ,you all really cheered me up x av a great weekend x

Devils advocate sorry. Initially post op my pain reduced dramatically, but after 6-8 months it came back. I know a lot of people more than a year out have had back pain or problems as the spine adjusts to a different weight balance, changed centre of gravity etc, sometimes exacerbated by muscle wastage and/or lack of muscle tone around the core muscles. Personally I ended up needing spinal surgery as I have suffered some wastage due to my chronic malabsorption and ended up with a herniated disc.

Now, my pain is slightly less than pre-op. But I have 3 chronic pain causing conditions, arthralgia, lupus arthritis and worse of all fibromyalgia. The weight loss hasn't improved any of these unfortunately.

I don't want to be all doom and gloom, I just want people to know that it depends on what is causing your pain as to whether it will vanish. If it is just general joint pain due to the heavy load bearing then yes thus should ease, but if there us a systemic cause or any damage to the joint mechanics has happened as a result of years of this load bearing then you may never get rid of it.

I hope you do though, it's not nice knowing that whatever you do in the future it will always be with pain as your companion.

thanks shelbell,i wanted honest advice and replies as always this is the best place to get that help ,and i can understand it depends on the causes of the pain,im sure il still have some pain ,maybe even different pain, like you explained ,but like i always say its best to have as much knowledge and information beforehand rather than rose coloured specs ,so again thanks love x
