Bypass in 2 weeks ... what should I be buying now to prepare for it and pre-op diet?

Hi

I am due to have my bypass in two weeks. What kind of things should I be buying ready for coming out of hospital so I'm prepared? (such as tablets, pain killers, food?)

Possibly a really stupid question but I haven't had any guidance from the hospital yet .. other than a pre-op diet sheet through the post.

Also, I start the pre-op diet in a few days - the leaflet I got says I can have veg soup once per day (home-made). Can I use stock cubes, seasoning etc? Any great soup recipes? :D

Thanks

Hello needtofeelnormal, all I can say to you is try your best to stick to the diet your doing im doing the food version but for 4 weeks try to have your meals ready in advance if you can and space them out so you dont get any hunger pangs , and drink plenty you may become a human water fountain but it will keep you full and your skin will love you!
Ive not got anything special in , got loads of slim fasts in as I can have those for the post op liquid part already have a hand blender for the puree bit and some small pots so I could prepare some food in advance if I want to
got also my vitamins tablets pain killers and peppermint tea for getting rid of the trapped wind I guess I will have ...phew thats a lot of advise!
Sorry if I went on a bit , but people on here were so helpful to me I want to share all that was passed on to me
good luck on your LSD ( ps dont get too mad at yourself if you slip up I know I have just dust yourself off and get yourself back on track)

Hi los in it ... that's great, thanks. I never thought about the peppermint tea. So you can drink slim fast post op? Does that include the pre-made stuff in cartons? When is your op? y pre-op diet is for 10 days and basically milk, yogurt, soup and 2 portions of fruit. I'm not too worried about the pre-op diet to be honest. I done the cambridge diet 5 years ago and lost 6 stone (never ate a thing for 11 months except 3 shakes a day) ... but then obviously put it all back on! :(

xx

on reading my booklet it says
stage 1 - liquid diet from day 2 for 2 weeks
for the first 2 weeks you will need to take only liquids this allows your new stomach pouch to heal and avoids it over stretching.(it says more but I will get to it)
the following liquids are a good source of protein
milk (semi) soya milk
clear ,cream or light soups with no bits
build up soups and shakes
complan ,ovaltine ,Horlicks ,milo made with semi skimmed milk
slim fast
thin yoghurt drinks with no bits (low fat or diet types ie flora pro active yogurt drink actimel 0.1% ,benecol light
thin custards
I brought the pre made stuff up so I can just get it straight from the fridge and avoid the faffing about with making it up
my WLS is this Thursday coming (18th sept)
hope that is of some help but do always get in touch with your team as I see that each team does it differently

Thanks for the reply - good luck for next week. Looking forward to hearing how you get on xxx

While I would agree that you shouldn't beat yourself up as by then its too late anyway, its so important to stick to it. For your own safety while under the knife, hang in there - it is only 2 weeks!
