3 Days post op bypass

Hi ALL
Thought id share my story so far, 3 days now post op from Gastric Bypass
went into hospital wanting a sleeve, got bypassed due to previous stomach
operation and surgeon finding a hiatus hernia in my stomach, had my op at
Queen Alexandra in portsmouth with Mr Shaw somers, i paid privately through
his own company streamline surgical, At Qa they have a lovely private ward
called the Harbour Suite, all nurses very good, but let me tell you the bed
mattresses are not made for us big boys and girls, came home with back ache
and consequence was i spent most of my time walking around the hospital at all hours, , but hey ho all done now and looking forward to quite a quick weight loss, Bmi was only 40.8, cause im a big framed man Mr somers seems to think that i will loose my weight in under 6 mths,
My main problem going forward will be getting the right protein in to my body
i do not take any milk or soy milk products without sickness always been an issue, How do i get my protein in at breakfast? what should i even eat for breakfast?
I am drinking plenty and getting enough fluids really do not need any painkillers , and was up taking my first walk 2 hours after surgery and was up for nearly 3 days, so had a good nights sleep in my own bed last night,
so looking forward was wondering if anyone can shed some light on my milk issue,
good luck to all,

Hi I was bypassed at Qa too I used to love milk before my op now I can't drink a glass of milk after my op I find it makes me feel sick I wouldn't worry too much 3 days in but fish chicken Greek yogurt nuts are all good later on I've tried the protein shakes disgusting the main thing at the mo is fluids so keep drinking!!;) xx

Welcome. I'm under streamline too. Their Dieticians can help you with meal plans. Good luck xx

Hi Nicola, many thanks for your reply, i have spoken with nicola my dietician at streamline, and she gave me a few ideas but not much help really, when you cant have milk yogurts etc makes it ball alot harder, i am currently only on soups blended lunch and evening, but nothing else, Nicola was quite happy for me to do 3 soups a day, could not think of anything worse blended soup for breakfast, i do feel i will have many issues with this surgery going forward but glad ultimately that its a bypass which is reversible , if i ever got ill through a serious illness would definately opt to reverse at that stage as this is one of the areas that is controversial with this surgery, any serious illness that would require getting plenty more nutritian in than this op allows is the problem, but i am slowly going to look forward but would have no hesitation going back, on another note you have done amazing, and if your figures are correct a little too amazing, are you not worried that you will continue losing so much? be good to know thanks

Soon you'll be able to have some scrambled egg! If you like it. Lol
The bypass is very hard to reverse, I'm surprised it's even crossing your mind at this stage to be honest.

Thank you :) I've plateaued now; been the same weight about 3 months - my BMI is pretty spot on and streamline are happy and so am I.

It is a very hard journey and now I'm working hard to maintain - I still follow all the rules :)

Hi Nicola,

Many thanks for the reply, what are you actually eating each day? what do you have for treats? and how many times have you dumped?

also regarding reversal, the point i was making is that say i had a serious illness in the future but required more nutrition than i could get from the sleeve then i would not think twice about reversal, if someone done the sleeve in the same situation they would be up a creek without a paddle so to say, unless they wanted to be tube fed, so i think its right it is discussed just in case, be good to know if people actually thought of this prior to opting for a sleeve, I know guy slater and shaw somers are oth capable of reversing there own work, goodluck and well done

I eat 3 small meals and 2 snacks a day. I was very prone to dumping for first 6 months post bypass but I can tolerate a little more sugar now. High fat still makes me dump however. I try not to see any good as a "treat" I just try to eat a balanced diet. I have a few squares of dark chocolate now and then. I have takeaway food sometimes but I choose carefully. I have regular contact with the dietitian at streamline to help guide me. At 16 months out I'm still learning how to manage food.

I did actually have a complication with the bypass 2 months out - a stricture - which meant I could not eat for 13 days. I had a PICC line feeding me in my arms. This has been sorted now an it would take a lot for me to have a reversal.

Hi Nicola, how did your stricture become apparent? who treated you for this if
it was streamline where did they treat you what did they do?
x

Stricture became apparent as i could eat less and less then couldn't drink over course of 3/4 days. I then had to do a barium swallow. I was past 30 days so streamline did not treat me, I ended up in addenbrookes under nhs xmas/new year 2013/14

Oh nicola, really sorry to hear that, What were your feelings towards streamline at that point? and more importantly how were the nhs with this did
they question the surgery etc?

I'd rather not get into all that on a public forum! The NHS were fine but not specialist in bariatrics. It was all a bit of a mess at the time. I had to constantly explain to the NHS staff what I'd had done, etc. it was exhausting!

Hi Consie70, you must be approaching a week out from your surgery now? I assume you have left the hospital and all is well.

I wondered how you are coping with the liquid stage post op; as I see you have mentioned in a couple of threads that you cannot drink milk or eat milk products. My pre and post op sheets are littered with variations of milk so I wondered how you are coping? I am interested to see what else works as I am not so keen on milk - fortunately I have no allergy, it's just a taste thing - but if you have paved the way and found alternatives I'd willingly borrow with pride!

Like others have said - how reassuring to have been operated on by Shaw Somers - he is so very well regarded (and always on the telly!) Without pryng, was it his expertise that drew you to having the surgery privately there? I am plodding slowly along with the NHS. I did think about sorting out finance for private treatment but though I would try the NHS route first, and save my funds in case I need any further operations should my adherence to the surgery mean I lose a lot of weight!!! hahaha - I do worry I will find a way to beat it!

Anyhow, I really hope you are feeling well and you are adjusting well to your new replumbed gastric system :)

Understand your feelings about not wanting to get into this over the forum, i was very curious as stremliner too, sorry if it offended, x

HI There
for non milk lovers you can do a low carb meal plan for two weeks prior i lost about a stone, on mine, Mr somers is world renowned for the surgerys he seminars all over the planet and is a leading world figure in the game,

I was originally having sleeve changed last minute to bypass, glad i did really , with a sleeve remaining stomach is removed with bypass it remains and is still part of the digestive system, so basically if ever there were need or ever i wanted to i could have it reversed,
mr somers runs his own company streamline surgical in harrow, i saw him there pre op but opted for queen alexandra in portsmouth as my hospital, he does operate in harrow though, also cheepest sleeve in london is with mr mannur hes been on tv too, 7600 pounds, london obesity centre i do believe,
not really enjoying the whole experience at the mo, kinda wish i had not bothered really, lost 2 stone since surgery last tuesday so can imagine how i feel, but just managed to find a protein drink that contains no milk etc 24g of protein in 250ml of water fruits of forest flavour quite nice too, so hopefully that will give me more energy,

Sorry to read your not really enjoying the experience at the moment - I do think thats very common at the outset as it is, after all, fairly major surgery even in the hands of such an eminent and accomplished surgeon.

Hopefully in a month or two you will be over the moon, a slimmer chap for the summer and coping well - I am going to try and find the protein drink as thats awesome protein and no milk! yay - take care :)
