3 DAYS FROM SLEEVE

Hi to all im 3 days from getting my sleeve, with shaw somers at the Quuen alexandra in portsmouth, 100 miles away from home and self paying, having terrible day today on the low carb pre op diet, not lost alot at all, not cheated at all, but headaches nausea dizziness, really feel like putting something other
than meat or eggs in my mouth,
any help would be great

Hiya,

My Surgeon suggested I didn't go on any pre-op diet as he said it's possible to work around the liver for the op. He believes in following a low fat diet and as you're going to be restricted after the Op anyway, no need to be so restricted beforehand. I had lost 1-2kgs before my op anyway. I had my sleeve Op 2 weeks ago and went well.
I know so many other surgeons believe you have to lose weight first and judging by the amount of members that has had to lose weight first, I feel lucky!

Are you drinking about 2 litres of water a day? I know that helped my weight loss before!

Will they still go ahead with your Op if you haven't lost any weight?

Good luck and fingers crossed x

Thanks for reply

Hi There

i am only bmi of 40, and not sure if they will operate if i have not lost as
much as they think suitable, they have never mentioned not operating, as
i am self paying,
Im not missing anything in particular in with what im eating just feel really AWFUL, i am really looking forward to the op,
i drink around 10 black coffees and 2 litres of water daily, so plenty of fluid,
can not have milk as i am intolerant to it,
Mr patel would not operate on me as i had a previous stomach op for gastric
reflux, so blessed really that i found someone who would be able to help,

How was recovery etc.. for you and what loss have you seen in short time since surgery? good luck

Hi Consie70,

Prof Patel has also been a liver specialist before which is why he doesn't feel that a pre op diet is required as he can work around lifting the liver to operate on the stomach. It's a shame he couldn't take you as your previous gastric op must've been big. My BMI was 43 and he was happy to operate on me.
My recovery is going well thanks and I've lost 11lbs so far but it's early days yet and from what I've read, the weight can still fluctuate.

Where are you having yours done and who is your Surgeon? Perhaps some other members can point you in the right direction?!

Good luck with your Op. Try not to stress about it. I've seen Bariatric programmes for people in USA who get operated on who are over 600lbs so everything is possible.
It'll be over before you know it.

Let us know how you get on. All the best x

Hi Consie,
10 black coffees a day is rather a lot. Maybe that is what making you feel ill?

I did not have pre op diet either, so I am sure you will be fine.

Hi Consie

Do you have a specific diet that you have to stick to and are you eating all the elements. I was not given a plan to follow other than low cal/carb so I googled and found several from other hospitals and realised most followed the same pattern so that is what I am doing. I have not had any problems and in fact feel a lot healthier and alert.

Could you not use lacto-free milk, can you have fruit and veg?

Very jealous of you having Shaw Somers, I have seen him on TV and he is an awesome surgeon. I am going to Belgium for my surgery.

Good luck with your journey and stay on this site for support

Hi There

many thanks for the replys,, 10 black coffees are better than 10 black teas
more caffine in tea,
I have been on Low carb, 2 eggs for breakfast, 100g chicken with salad
for lunch, and 100 grams any meat and salad for dinner, allowed 2 pears or apples a day as snacks, I do not have any other treats etc,, felt really
awful yesterday ate a pastry, felt great, got up this morning lost 4lb overnight,
could not believe it, obviously my body does not like too little carbs, only on
about 40g a carb a day, and not doing me any good, having my op
on Tuesday may well have a proper meal tonight and be back to normal
tomorrow, just so i have enough energy to get through my days work tomorrow, , Im having done at Nhs hospital Queen Alexandra in portsmouth
but self paying on private ward, like the idea if something goes wrong that
your in proper nhs hospital, op guaranteed for two years follow up with all
consults re op if needed, and all dietician and nurse appointments with mr shaw somers, so having the tv fat doctor, feel really lucky, Nearly had my op in Bruges Beigium with Bruno Dillemans, its like a catlle market overthere
he operates on about 20 people a day and done his consult with all on his op list in front of each other discussing each and everyones individual cases, i told him where to go and got my money back, good luck with your opin belgium, different surgeon should be a much better experience, x

The pre-op diet is not about losing weight, it is about shrinking your liver to make surgery easier. I know Rinata's surgeon does not believe in it but many require it, certainly one hospital site I was on warned against having a last night blow out meal.

I actually live in Portsmouth but could not get NHS surgery and unfortunately there is no way I could afford private costs in this country
