Band & Bypass Question

Jezabelle

Quitting is NOT an option
I am wondering why some people have to have open surgery and some not?

Or am I being totally blonde?

The Lap Band is always done as keyhole where are the bypass can be done either way. you tend to find that some NHS patients have open due to the amount of funding the PCT agree to.
Other reasons can be that they are doing more than one procedure and need open for that.

Aswell as PCT funding issues with NHS, previous abdominal surgery can prevent procedures being done by keyhole.

I was told that they would do an open bypass if a laproscopic one proved too difficult - ie, they found loads of scar tissue, adhesions or ulcers etc - luckily it was laproscopic!

Very interesting.... Thank you all for all the replies.

I've had no previous opps on my stomach so if I do go for a Bypass I hope it would be via key hole.

I'm still undecided wether to have band or bypass and need to make my mind up by Thursday.

Jezzabell don't decide untill you've spoken to your consultant. They will advise you which op would be the most beneficial for you. You don't have to have what they say if you feel different about their choice but do speak with them as they will help make the right decision.

As was previously said, bands are always done laparoscopically. Some PCTs only fund open bypass surgery unless there are mitigating circumstances. Open surgery is quicker, cheaper and as one surgeon put it laparoscopic bypass"......is like trying to paint the hall through the letterbox" !! :giggle: Marion xx

Thank you again for getting back to me...
I'm in the process of reading "Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies" which I might add is pretty good so far. It is going over alot of things that I have already read on the internet as well.
Thanks again all xx
