so a BMI of57 with comorbidities is in the instance of NICE good?

You should be referred directly for surgery, if that's your bmi and you have co morbidities. The surgeon will then decide if surgery is the most appropriate and safest option for you.

In England at least you can find out what your local criteria are at BOSPA.org

Unfortunately, in many cases, that often means even higher BMI. Many may link it to completion of a weight management course.

Where I am in Glasgow, there is very little chance of being offered wls even after attending course, so I have chosen to go abroad. Good luck with your funding, hope you get it!

Well that's the way I interpreted it too if your bmi is over the 50 mark you do not have had to attend anything but should be referred to wls and the surgeon than will advise if it is appropriate to do the surgery but the funding still needs to be obtained. Good Luck.

I have a BMI higher than 50 and was referred straight away by my GP for surgery. Got a referral letter through last week, now awaiting an appointment to be set to see the consultant. From what I gather, a bmi of 50 or more is considered to be treated with surgery as a first choice.

I had bmi of 61 with health probs and still had to do corses and lose 10% and just been put forward for funding so just coz of high bmi dosent mean u don't have to do the corses ect

Sadly the BOSPA website is totally out of date and doesn't get updated. The only sure way to find out your local guidelines is to call your PCT.

I have to admit to totally taking my eye off the ball. The new procedures re: funding bought in earlier this year. Does that effect whether all PCTs have to follow the criteria or is it just the method of approving funding that's changed?

Sadly guidelines are literally just advisory and are not enforceable - and terrible for those that fall within the NICE guidelines but outside their local regulations. :-(

Oh I have done courses the Trafford lifestyle...WW.. Sliming world... lighter life.. diet pills cabbage soup diets the lot...been seeing dieticians...the latest one which says her boss said I was to be put forward for surgery right away..

I have sleep apnoea..diabeets2 ..ostio arthritis.. cholesterol issues...and more niggles than I can shake a stick at ...so I am still in shock that I could possibly be there at the end of the tunnel so to speak or at least glimpsing a light.. been so many years coming I still do not think its real but his secretary said id be hearing from them very soon within two weeks if not less.

fingers crossed I am almost getting obsessive in watching you tube stories about by pass before and after and here and any information I can find.
