Ok so I have a 7 (almost)yrs old and child care being a issue...have ostio arthritis in knees and hip...So I was thinking rather than going to a gym initially till I get confident.. how or what could I get to help me exercise..i was thinking a recumbent exercise bike ( the sit down on a proper chair on)

BUt they have something called a Ijoy! there too...and vibro machines..(there's a recurrent theme here) Has anyone tried them.. I couldn't do a tread mill.. or cross trainer ect..so have any of you tried the above?

I did use resistance machines where you lie still and the machine moves you and you have to try to not move with it/push against it - good result for the thighs, abs etc but no cardio involved at all, so more for toning than weight loss....

I would get some expert advice though - if you have OA you don't want to risk making things worse / aggravating the inflammation ... could a physio give you some exercises you could do safely without pain?

Good luck ... I must admit, an Ijoy sounds like something out of ann summers!!! xxx

What about swimming you could take your child so no worries about childcare even just walking in water is helpful and not stressful on joints

I just checked swimming at the local leisure centre they only do it for adults 8.00 till 8.30 then aquarobics which I would have enjoyed 8.30 till 9.15 (right on getting him to school) as the leisure centre ia part of the girls school there is nothing till a lunch time 12.30 1.15

Walking is very difficult cos of the ostio its a few meters and done....so walking right now till I have new knees and hip isn't much of a option which is why I am looking for low impact as in the sit down bike/vibro/ijoy..all seeming low impact on hip and knees ..I know the swimming will be a option of the lunch time.. taking tom would be fun but not really any exercise he has done his 2o meters but with mum there it will be more of a splash fun time than get me moving

Ill have a chat at docs see what they say

My local leisure centres are similarly restricted on times for adults to just swim. Do you have any hotels with pools nearby? Sometimes the smaller hotels will have special offers on daytime pool use. I go to a holiday inn that has a 13m pool - tiny, but as it's always empty that's not an issue. I pay around £15 a month, but for a one off swim they charge £3 I think.

There is a small gym attached but I've not worked up the courage to go - I'd be mortified if I broke a machine!

I will look into that great idea...as for the latter end of what you said I spluttered laughing..as I feel the same

Hey Jo, join me at Bannatynes by the uni in crewe. Its just off the end of the bypass so you'd only be 5-10mins away. Get a weekday only 7-4:30pm membership, its the cheapest one. Then we can train together! Sue x

NOW that I like the idea of googling them now

I have a vibration plate. I also have arthritis and multiple permanent fractures in my right ankle following bad accident, hence unable to "exercise"

The vibro plate is AMAZING it has not only made a big difference to my symptoms but it has totally changed the shape of my legs, butt, hips and arms. I'm reluctant to put my tummy directly on it to avoid damaging or misplacing the band.

From an ease point of view, I do 15 minutes a day. I'm neatly 3months out and I could start seeing the changes about 2/3 weeks ago, although my mum was about 28 days of going on it twice a day x15 min.

I've started swimming in the last 2 weeks and feel this would totally complement the vibro plate in giving me a full body workout with zero stress to my joints.
Hope that feedback helps!

I rang the gym up...32 pounds a month 6.30 am to 4.30 pm do what yer like as long as you like...

They have the vibroplate thing there and a 20m pool...the recumbent bikes.. and another machine they said was similar to vibro but heck if I can recall.. I said I was having gastric bypass....and they were fine...even with me taking a float to use in pool till I get some strength and confidence up...they also have the people there to supervise and advice..so jobs a good un as they say.. will drop tom of at school be there by about 9.20 for a cple of hrs maybe will help with the getting out and about re-socialising ect

AS for VIBRO now I cant wait!

What vibroplate did you get?..what's the weight limit on it.. the girl said it was more to shape and tone she mentioned she loved them

Great news Jo. I go first thing after school run too with my mum. They are really good about using equipment in the pool. We use our mask and snorkels every time. There also have aqua fit which you can do at a level for you. Plus the spa pool is lovely for joints and muscles, really hot and bubbly. We love it.

OMG you torment me ...heheh..I do not know what has got into me after years of not bothering about myself..i am doing the growing of nails.. plucking of brows.. shaving of legs.. And I am becoming quite go getish in the way I am being about things...even on the phone yesterday I was like " I am having a GB " with the girl and I do not care who knows it
