Nutritional guidelines

Hi everyone,

Given the large number of questions regarding nutrition and vitamins in particular I thought I'd post a link to this study. It was carried out by the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society

BOMSS Nutritional Guidance | BOMSS

This is the most uptodate nutritional guidance available, and covers all the major surgeries. It is the first study of its kind in the UK and would benefit everybody on here as it is something we can take to our GPs when asking for support, particularly when they themselves are unsure.

Yve.

Very useful, I'm going to trawl through all of it. Nice to see in the index they have a section on 'prolonged vomiting'. Nice!

Thanks for posting this link Yve.

I am pleased that they're seeing a need for consensus amongst bariatric teams!!!

Thanks for the link Yve ... Just away to trawl through it right now :)

Having spoken to my team about this they have confirmed that they are going to be acting on these guidelines and that they are accurate and best practice guidelines.

I was looking for this thread the other day following a discussion with my gp for my vit b12 jab. Discussing vitamin d and calcium deficiency, adcalD vs constipation and alternatives. Instead of discussing alternatives he threw in this.....
We will retest you and if they come back all fine then we will stop the adcal D as there is a new protocol coming into play that we don't treat vitamin D deficiencies any more....
ehhhhh what??! And does this apply to gastric bypass patients too?? Was my reaction
Going for my blood test this afternoon watch this space. Also going to print this document out and post it personally to him!..he is a great doctor but as regards WLS he is bloody clueless! Also have an app with my surgeon where I will be raising this "new protocol"

what?? Why would they not treat it?

Because apparently most of the populatation are vitamin d deficient ?? Hardly a reason IMO but there you go :sigh: ... I really wasn't in the frame of mind to argue with him tbh ...I had been waiting an hour to be seen at this point, badly in need of my b12, crabbit as hell and in no mood for a debate.... However I'm prepared for round 2 if it should happen. Team appointment tomorrow where I will be asking a few question too.

Surely you are under the exception category as you are under a specialist??

Sorry I meant to update you on my visit yesterday but got rather carried away with my plastics news
I told the team nurse who was horrified but not surprised. Yes of course we are iunder the exemption category but it appears that my gp has just skirted through the new protocol, gleaned little bits of info from it and then thinks he knows it all.. A dangerous thing imo for a doctor to do this but quite clearly in her opinion what is what he has done . She told me that a few years ago it was apparent that they were having similar issues with various clients general practitioners so decided that they needed to address this & organised a working seminar with all the trimmings of cheese, wine & cold buffet. 250 invites went out across Scotlands gp's...only 40 turned up and most of them where apathetic to the needs of the bariatric patient. She recalls one who actually stated that surely surgery isn't the answer when all "they" needed to do is stop eating and exercise! Shocking attitude all round by the people who are supposed to be caring for us... and are getting paid a pretty penny for supposedly doing so.
