The WORST Thing About Having Had Surgery

Hi Folks,

In keeping with Gaelic Girls thread; I thought I'd open a slightly more pessimistic one .. :D lol. Only joking.

In all seriousness I'd like to know, as the title states, what is the worst thing about having had weight loss surgery, be it; band, bypass, sleeve, balloon et al.

I appreciate very few of you, if at all, have regrets about having your weight loss procedures done, meeting Nevé yesterday is testament to that. However I'm intrigued as to what frustrates you, annoys you having now committed your lives to being a post-oper (so to speak).

Be honest ... we're all friends here and who knows you may even get a solution to said irritation - if there is a solution.

Cheers,

CC :)

One thing I'm sad about was that I had to have surgery at all to lose weight....I'm sad I let myself get into such a state and so low I couldn't see a way out at all.
The flipside is that my overall situation changed gradually and I was able to have the op when circumstances were better for my family overall and I had a better mindset going into it.

Another bad thing was I didn't get support from my doctor when I really needed it badly... I was 64 bmi and I was desparately unhappy, agoraphobic, depressed and trying to home school my kids who had just been diagnosed at the time. I had a breakdown and had to fund councelling myself so I felt let down and still pretty bitter about it all sometimes.

The flipside is I had my surgery private when we moved and was mentally much more ready for change.

A downer? I hoped so much that the band would stop me thinking or worrying about food at all...I didn't care about what I could eat so much as having the whole dilemma removed so I wouldn't feel controlled by food anymore. I was put out when I got zilch restriction for most of the first year.

The flipside? I had to develop self control and I feel I now have done so..it's very wobbly self control but I am now feeling confident that I can take care of myself and be a much better role model for my kids and the rest of my family x

I'm very happy with my bypass in most respects and my only concern is that my head wasn't involved. I've had to keep a strict eye on myself all along and even now still try to work out how i can eat the most.

The only down side for me is the dizziness i've experienced lately, which I am in the process of sorting, and the fact that I should have had the op about 10 years ago:eek::eek:

My only downside with the bypass is the urine infection I suffered from having the catheter in - that was painful for a week. Apart from that, everything's been ok (touch wod!)

I still am very disappointed with myself that I needed to have this op. I sppent some time at a tibetan refugee camp, and I wonder what they would think of me for being so greedy that I had to have my stomach severed to lose weight.

like the others I regret not having the op sooner, and that I had so little self control that I needed to resort to WLS to help me lose the weight.

The only downside for me really has been gallstones, but then I could possibly have developed those anyway without the bypass, I will never know.

Oh and of course the loose skin, but again, that could have happened if I had lost the weight by diet alone.

Hand on heart i really cant think of one negative thing about my surgery xxx

For me - less confidence post op. Caring more about my appearance etc, caring that I look like large normal person rather than just plain old fat. Random I know - but Im being honest x

I used to enjoy eating out with friends spending hours over food and drink but find that mealtimes are over pretty quickly now. I miss the food/socialising side of eating and see it now purely as nutritional loading. Its just a case of adapting and replacing that pleasure with something else (not basing socialising around food)

Hi Stella i am further down the line than you and often go for a harvester with my friends, i have the simply chicken with jacket potato and of course the lovely salad, i do seem able to eat most of it maybe cos i spend longer eating it as we chat so much but i do think in the future you will be able to socialise over a meal xxx

Not being prepared for life after the bypass! I would have appreciated counselling before and after the op to learn why I became overweight to begin with! I am a year and a half post op and find that I am suffering from head hunger now more than ever...............

I'm with Lisa, don't regret a thing! :D

Love it, love it, love it! And life's too short for regrets...

Cuppa xx

Like Cuppa & Lisa, no regrets for me either.... I would never have achieved this level of weight loss without surgery!

regret not wearing that new shirt i bought a week ago..... too big now ...... :D
