Hi everyone. I have been reading the posts on here for a while before getting brave and registering myself, but have found the advice and support given by everyone very inspirational.

I have been overweight for most of my adult life and I have been trying to get funding for gastric bypass for over 2 years now and recently got my 4th refusal even though I have sleep apnoea, arthritis, BMI over 50 and a condition that there is not much knowledge about, but one of the side effects is that it can cause obesity.

I have appealed, again, but not holding up much hope. It's such a shame that PCT's around the country do not use the same NICE guidelines, because if I lived just 3-4 miles from my home I would come under another PCT who just use the NICE guidelines and would have had the operation by now.

I have contacted a solicitor to see about a judicial review, but was advised to try to exhaust every avenue with my PCT before going down this road. I just have to wait for the outcome of my last appeal before I consider what steps to take next, but it does get very distressing every time.

Thanks for letting me share.

Tracey

Sorry to hear this Tracey, must be so hard for you x

How very upsetting and frustrating. I know it sounds extreme but can you not move the few miles? It's probably easier than dragging your pct through court. It's not fair though, yet another example of the hns post code lottery.

Hi

Yes I suppose it would be easier to move the few miles, but all the upheaval of moving and selling and buying would be too much. I have come to the conclusion that if I don't get any joy with this appeal I will have to look into financing it myself. Makes me mad, but got to put my health and sanity first!!

welcome Tracey :) where in Essex are you from? Im from Basildon x

Aw I am so sorry to hear that you are having such a hard time. In times like this though I always find that it's better to get angry! That way you will want to fight for what's right and not take no for an answer! Im not sure how it works on your side as far as getting the surgery. But from what I gather it seems pretty unfair! Just don't give up. If you need it then keep fighting for it and don't take no for an answer! You don't have a friends address that you can use? Just a thought. I wish you the best of luck. Keep your chin held high and I'm sure things will work out for you.

Hi Tracey, So sorry about that ... :( Hope you are not going to give up. There are lots of people on here that had to fight to get their op. It really is a postcode lottery & so unfair. I know Scotland is very difficult but didn't realise Essex was as bad as all that, although my buddy Caren is having a hard time too. Chin up & keep trying :):)

Hi and Welcome Tracey, sorry to hear you are having such a difficult time getting funding, its not fair how some of us get it and some dont, they should use one set of guidelines across the board. Good Luck xx

Thanks everyone, it's nice to know there are people out there who understand. Caren I'm from Grays. :)

welcome Tracey :) so sorry you're having problems :( im so glad youre not giving up!! stick with it mate, youll get there in the end!! :girlpower:

Welcome Tracey keep ur chin up Hun and I'm sure u will get the funding in the end ?

Hi Tracy, I am SO sorry to read about the horrible time you have had and your many disappointments. I wish you all the luck in the world with your PCT meeting. Don't know if it would be any help but my sister in Hampshire was waiting years in same situation as yourself until she went to see a specialist who said that her arthiritis was really bad and she would need two new knees but wanted her to lose weight prior to him doing the surgery. She told him her situation and he wrote to the PCT on her behalf and she got funding within a few weeks. She had the bypass, loads of weight was lost, she had one new knee and they told her that she didn't need the other one doing as her weight loss had solved the problem.

If you can get a consultant or specialist on your side it might make the world of a difference.

(((((hugs)))))

Hi everyone. Well I had my meeting on the 8th and put all my evidence across again and it seems that the panel did not take my letter from my sleep apnoea consultant fully into account so I was told that they would get back to me. I went in holiday on the 14th, but still did not hear anything. Home on the 21st and still nothing and then yesterday I had a letter to say the funding had been approved because of my sleep apnoea yippee!! I still can not believe it and have to keep reading the letter!!

I have been in touch with the hospital and they now have a copy of the letter, but because it had been over 2 years since they last saw me I have to start the process from the beginning, bit of a pain but ok as I now know it will happen eventually.

I hope this gives some encouragement to others on here who are fighting for funding, keep at it and you'll hopefully get there in the end.

Hugs to all
Tracey
