Hi Ladies,
Hope you all are doing fine. I have been a little bit busy as my friend had a baby girl on the 28th of Sept and i am on hospital duty everyday since then. I have my 1st appointment with Dr simon coppack on the 7th and 2nd appointment with the dietitian on the 6th of this month. I'm scared that as i have lost a few pounds and gone below BMI 40, i won't be getting the op. i've been seeing the dietitian for last 5 months, fertility specialist from last 1 and half years. i'm getting so nervous and thinking negative all the time. I'm afraid that i won't be able to talk to the Dr properly for this nervousness. please help.

Nice to see you farzu!

Congratulations on the birth of your daughter!

Best of luck with your appointment, I hope it all goes well for you!

Hi Farzu, Ive been wondering how you've been getting on.

Good luck with your appointment and I'll keep my fingers crossed that they will give you the go ahead for surgery x

hello, thanks ladies for all your support. I was too scared before but still i am confused about what should i tell the Dr. I think my GP referred me for band but i prefer bypass as i'm diabetic, do we have a choice or it totally depends on the circumstances?

Hi Farzu,

Did you get my PM?
When I was referred I don't think my GP was specific about which op. After being assessed by the Bariatric Nurse, I saw the surgeon the next day. He said a bypass would be better for me because I'm diabetic. Though my bmi was also over 50 at the time.

I'm sure everything will be fine.

Homerton follow NICE Guide Lines.

NICE guidance states that you may be eligible for surgery if you:
  • have a BMI (body mass index*) of 35 or more with an obesity-related physical problem such as diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea or early arthritis that could be improved with weight loss
  • have a BMI of 40 or more
  • have failed to achieve or maintain clinically beneficial weight loss through non-surgical methods for at least six months (unless you have a BMI over 50, in which case you will go straight to surgery)
  • have a commitment to life-long follow up.
It is important that you consider all the options, and know the risks and benefits, before deciding to proceed with obesity surgery. At Homerton, in addition to our specialist surgeons, you will have access to a range of professionals who will be able to discuss the other aspects of your healthcare such as nutrition and exercise.
