Emmabeee - Gastric Bypass - My Day by Day Updates.

Hi i'm Emma you can call me Emz.

Im on day 4 of my pre op diet, i am having a Gastric Bypass on the 30th March 2009. I am 5ft 6inches and 24 stone / 154kg / 336lb

Best decision i've ever made having this Op. My weight has ruled my life.
I was bullied at school because i was slightly chubby and it has left a big scar and has scarred me ever since.
I'm now 30 and its still ruleing me, i have decided to take charge and sort this out the expensive but very worth it way, i've tried it all and nothing has worked for me.

I now have set some goals in my life, something i've never done before, my life has always been all over the place, mostly depressed too. These goals are keeping me focused and positive.
I'm starting college in September this year to do Human Biology and Sociology and redo my English and Maths, then next year i will apply to Hull University to do my degree in Midwifery.
I want to get my weight down so i feel confident in the uniform, i can then concentrate fully on my work and the patients rather than feeling insecure about how i look, which is the way i've been since i was 12, because of what happened to me at school.

My boys, Jack (9) and Ashley (5) are looking forward to having a fun energetic mummy that will be able to run around the park and join in the play. They are the 2 things that have kept me going through my depression, amazing little boys, i'm so proud of them. Very happy, bright and smart young lads. My fiancee Steve is supporting me too, he is very nervous, more so than me about this operation, he's scared something will go wrong, but the surgeon has eased his mind loads, because for a very overweight person, i am luckily very healthy, another reason to sort out my weight now before diabetes or any other horrible disease sets in.

I have started a diary and will try to update it as often as possible to try and help anyone else who reads it.

I am here not just for myself but i will support you all too. Any questions you have don't hesitate to ask, or tell me your stories, we can guide each other through our journeys

Good Luck Everyone! xxxxx

On day 4 now.

I walked past my neighbours yesterday, they were cooking bacon, its amazing how strong my sense of smell has become. That is not a good thing! lol

I REALLY miss chewing and biting into food. I know i will do again, but it won't be for another couple of months yet.

Bit of advise for everyone thinking of having surgery:
Its really hard (and i'm only on day 4 of the pre op diet), don't get me wrong its the best thing i could ever have done, just don't take the decision lightly, its a massive massive change!

Good luck with your journey Emz. Look forward to sharing it with you xx

Hi hun, thanks for sharing your story. I found the pre-op diet hard as well but I did the low cal/low fat one so I was able to chew. It seems like a million years for the surgery day to arrive but the time after that just flies by. I can't believe that I am now almost 5 months post-op!! It feels like just yesterday I found this site & was counting down to my own surgery date!

Best of luck with the pre-op & you will be done with your surgery in no time. Stay strong, the pay-off is really worth it, trust me!

Nic;)

Hi Emz

Great reading your story, im on day 2 of pre op diet (the Milk one!!!) it's been ok your right you see so many people eating or people around you are talking food lol..I see you're having your op on the 30th March, mines on the 1st April only a couple of days appart. I wish you all the best and keep in contact, would love to know how you're getting on. xxx

Hi Vics. I presume the pre-op diet your on is from St Richards? What does it entail so I know for future reference (eventually!!!!). Hope all goes well on 1 April. Bet you had a moment when you heard the date that you thought 'April Fool'!. Julie xx

Hi Julie, the pre op diet im sory to say it's the milk diet apparently thats the preferred diet for shaw somers patients... ok it's 4 pints semi skimmed milk a day, 1 salty drink (stock cube or marmite) 2 litres of other diet soft drinks, you can have a sachet of sugar free jelly and 3 sticks of chewing gum a day.......2nd day and it's not that bad havent really felt hungry sticking to it as scared they wont do the op if my liver has'nt shrunk... managed 3 1/2 pints yesterday and have had 3 1/2 pints so far today.. mind over matter, means to the end of fat unhappy Vic. When i got the call on Friday i did ask if she was winding me up lol... xxx

I am doing same diet.

I REALLY MISS FOOD NOW. Day 4
OMG how can i last.
Did you say you can have jelly and chewing gum? chewing gum would help me loads, thats what i miss most, not the food, but the chewing.

i'm drinking lots of peppermint tea at the mo, hate water on its own.

my diet sheet says: 2 pints milk plus 3.5litres of fluid ie: water, herbal/fruit tea, sugar free squash, decaff tea/coffee. 1-2 low fat diet yoghurts.

7am: All Milk (semi skimmed) Decaff Coffee 250ml

9am: Glass of Milk (semi skimmed) 250ml

12noon: Diet Yoghurt and cup of decaff tea with milk or Fruit/Herbal Tea.

3pm: Diet Yoghurt

5pm: Oxo Drink or marmite/Bovril Drink

7pm: All milk (semi skimmed) decaff coffee 250ml

9pm: vanilla flavoured milk (semi skimmed) 250ml

Plus 3.5l of water as well as the above.

I am peeing for Britain at the moment with all these liquids.
