I wouldn't mind telling my story at all. A few years back my son whilst in the army collapsed. He'd been ill for weeks and they left it untreated. After a lot of arguing and carry on it turned out that he had phnuemicocal Meningitis and ended up with three abcesses on his brain.
The Army were very badly behaved about the whole thing and sent his unit away so that they couldn't access phones or contact their family, but someone managed to and before I knew it I had dozens of reporters on my doorstep.
We did sell my sons story, mainly because we didn't want it to happen to anyone else and it also helped our case when it came to sueing the Army. My son now has brain damage but thankfully did survive.
We foolishly got an agent so our story went to The Sun in the end because she sold to the highest bidder, having said that they were really good and did a factual sympathetic two page story so it wasn't so bad.
These days after working in the media and not being quite as stupid, I would probably sell my story direct to one of the mags for a number of reasons. One, why let a reporter have a chunk of the money, while you are the one that went through it? Two, the mags are more likely to be sympathetic towards this type of surgery and three, they pay a lot more.
Did you know mags like Take a Break are now paying four figure sums for their major stories?
