How your band works - I have an answer!

Following on from my previous thread about how your band actually works, I have spoken to Sally from THG and she explained it perfectly. I know some people have had problems with Sally before, comparing her to a used car salesman but she has always been great with me and fully answered any questions I have had.

Right, basically years ago when a band was fitted, everyone thought that it worked by creating a pouch at the top of the stomach with the band making it like an hour glass shape. Food came into the pouch and when you were full you were full. Over time, the pouches stretched and people lost restriction.

Dr Paul O'Brien is one of the leading band specialists and has discovered that the band actually works by stimulating some nerves at the top of your stomach which makes your brain think you are full. Food hits your band, a small amount goes through and the rest goes back up your food pipe (you can't feel this) and tries again upto 6 times before it goes down. Your brain thinks you have had upto 6 mouthfuls. This takes upto a minutes so you have to eat slowly and also very small amounts. The band is put right at the top of the stomach - Sally said old bandsters have a large egg sized pouch but new bandsters (banded by Mr Sigurdsson at least) have ones the size of a shallot! This in part is because of the realisation re the nerves and also to allow for the pouch stretching over time.

You can drink when you eat as it won't make you throw up as with the old bandsters but you will flush the food through so won't feel full for so long.

Apparantly, Mr Sigurdsson has been working closly with Dr O'Brien with his research so this is why he knows so much about it but Sally said that sometimes they have to tell him off a bit as he gives too much information which can be a bit confusing! I am not sure if it is just Mr S that bands this way or everyone currently doing bands so I guess people would have to ask their providers.

Hope this clears it up a bit!

Hmm I might be missing something here but aren't all bands placed at the top of the stomach?

I appreciate different surgeons will have their preferences but I would hope this would be patient specific much the same as the decision over which size band to use.

I was aware of the top part being the bit of your stomach that 'feels' hunger.

Anyway - it would appear that we all have pouches, just some bigger than others.

Im assuming mine is egg sized, I will check with my provider when I see them next.

Thanks for asking x

Not sure Kevin. I imagine it tells you on 8 Golden Rules. Perhaps as it makes your 'hole' smaller it takes more attempts for the food to go through???? Just a guess

Sally said hers is further down than mine. Mine is right at the top.

Yes pretty much! The more fill you have in, the narrower the stoma (opening) where your band is so food filters down slower the more you saline you have in there

I can tonight Karen! It was really preying on my mind as I needed to know!!! I was pleased as Sally knew exactly what I was talking about and we chatted for ages. She said Mr S is one of the most knowledgeable and passionate (oo er!) surgeons about for banding.

Ah thanks for info I getting so excited about now roll on 8th aug can't wait i also with sig and really good reviews if it stops me from getting hungry then then woohoo

Thats exactly how mine was sold to me by the national obesity centre, all around the nerve endings and that it would be placed right at the top of my stomach, however, my surgeon said she leaves a small pouch. But I know the theory is pretty much the same and makes sense in my brain. That was an excellent explanation of it though, even clearer than I had had and will help me explain it when I finally get round to telling my mum what I have had done!! x x x

Couldn't quite put it into words chopster so thanks for this. I was under the impression that foods that went down easily were better for you but it's been explained to me that there needs to be something to "hit" the band to trigger that contraction and make us feel full. I'm not using the correct terminology but I understand it a bit better now, I think.
