Pre-op diet has changed!!

Had my pre-op assessment this morning and, after finding out that they had no information about the pre-op diet (not even when I'm to start it). The one thing they were able to give me was the name of the nurse specialist for the bariatric team I am under and I was able to speak to her and the dietician this afternoon and I am so glad I did!!!

Last year when I saw the dietician as part of my pre-MDT appointments she gave me a copy of a diet which doesn't seem to be used by anyone elses surgeons - no meat or fish, only fat from yoghurt, fromage frais and milk, allowed all fruit and vegetables and even allowed sweets and lots of sugars!!

Today I have learnt that it has changed now as that was the choice of the old surgeon who left last spring, they are now following the 4 option diet as used by St Georges Hospital in Tooting...........

Option 1 - 4 cans of weight watchers (or similar diet brand) soup, 4 pots of virtually fat free yoghurt (suggests mullerlight) and 200mls semi-skimmed milk a day

Option 2 - 5 pints of milk a day (nothing else!!)

Option 3 - 2 cans of soup, 2 pots of yoghurt and 2 pints of milk a day

Option 4 - precisely weighed portions of general foods (was told will be something like 45g breakfast cereal with 50mls milk, 1 slice bread with scraping of low fat spread and marmite or similar) Allowed free amounts of vegetables but no root veggies - so no potatoes, onions, peas, carrots, yams, parsnip, swede, turnip, beetroot

I can choose to do a different one of the options each day - so could rotate the 4 options for the 2 weeks I'm on the diet (old one was 3 weeks).

Apparently I can also have a 'reasonable' amount of sugar free jelly a day and (if I really want it) 3 pieces of chewing gum a day.

Coffee and tea are allowed but, if I add milk it has to come out of my allowance. Am not allowed to add sugar to drinks.

The dietician is arranging for the diet sheet to be sent out to me today so I get it over the next couple of days.

I am not sure I will be able to stick to something like 5 pints of milk a day - though, if I can get some sugar free Crusha it may be easier - I think the mix of soup, yoghurt and milk may be the easiest as I can change flavours during the week.

What do others think?

I too am leaning towards the idea of option 3. I'm just waiting for the actual paperwork to come through the post and then I can see what extra items I can add (if any).

I have also decided to try and do a day following each of the options over the next week starting with the 5 pints of milk day which I think could be the worst although it's the easiest to plan out!!

I think it may be because they are high in sugar - if you look at the WW points system (old style) peas have got points which is rare for any plain vegetable!! - I may mention it to them on friday at support group and see what they say!!
