Why does the liver need to shrink?

Just wondered, I'm assuming it's to do with anatomy and it not getting in the way?

yep, its big and in the way lol, they use an instrument to hold it up when they operate, which they cant do if its too big, which is why u mustn't cheat on the pre op diet. Some people wake up to find they havent done the op xxx

The liver is fragile / friable and can't cope with rough handling. It needs to be held up out of the way of the instruments, so the smaller it is, the easier it is to avoid puncturing it accidentally.
