Do you know of anyone who had a gastric bypass 10, 15, 30 years or more?

Thanks - CC

The current bypass procedures are not that old the oldest research studies I can find only go back 6/7 years so it would be highly unlikely that there is anyone in the uk who is anymore than 6 years post op. Before this it was a procedure known as stomach stapling and was completely different to the bypass.

Hope this helps

This is something I asked a while ago as I'm very interested in long term effects of having such drastic surgery, not just from the point of view of weight loss and keeping it off, but also long term health.

Hi there...

found this on the web

"The Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass, Roux-en-Y, first performed in 1993, is regarded as one of the most difficult procedures to perform by limited access techniques, but use of this method has greatly popularized the operation, with benefits which include shortened hospital stay, reduced discomfort, shorter recovery time, less scarring, and minimal risk of incisional hernia."

The first use of the loop gastric bypass, in 1967, used a loop of small bowel for re-construction, rather than a Y-construction as is prevalent today.

So I guess there are longer term patients out there but its hard to find any detailed research.

I saw a nurse a few weeks ago and he said when he was doing his nurse training in the 80's he'd often see recovering bypass patients on the wards he worked on as they were frequently botched at the time!! Glad they've improved somewhat!

I do know someone (a friend of a friend) who has failed with this operation. She said he'd just eat a little bit more with each meal, just a mouthful and it ended up stretching his pouch so much that he needed a second op to reduce it again!

I guess you would need to look at the american forums to find more long term patients CC.

I remember when i first joined this group a girl who wanted the bypass but was scared because her mom had it 10 yrs or more earlier and they made a bit of a cock up of it... She was scared but her mom was behind her all the way! Unfortunately i cannot remember her name or if she is still on here (mini mins sorry :) )..

CC if you PM me I'll give you details of an american site where you can find people sometimes posting 10 years out but you may already have found it
