Just something that has puzzled me.....
Does anyone know why we have to take antacids after the op? I would have thought that, as the pouch is stapled and 'blocked off' from the rest of the stomach acid wouldn't be a problem. Zxx
Your old stomach will still make gastric juices and enzimes ready to break down the food its not going to get, therefore without the antacid you may get nausias and feel sick ! some dont get the sick feeling, some do. I'd follow the advice of your surgeon always and take the recomended antacid
pouch still produces saliva and acid to break up the food - I have not experienced any indigestion yet but people do - depends on what you eat and how your body tolerates it, I guess.
Your stomach (the larger bit) still makes acid as SS said. It then empties into your intestines after the bypassed bit. If you had acid issues pre-op, you can continue to have high acid production post-op. Over time that acid can damage your intestines where it dumps in undiluted by food. That is why my surgeon prefers to be safe and asks that you continue a daily antacid for life.
Not everyone has excess acid, and many people who do notice their acid issues corrected by their post-op diet so people can be absolutely fine without daily antacids. I had GERD and suffered something terrible pre-op with acid so I am happy to continue taking the pills forever if that will make me never feel that vile acid tummy!!
I had lansaparol (sp?) (Zoton Fastabs) prescribed at hospital and given to me upon discharge. My GP prescribed them again after that but was unsure as to whether I would need them for long. At my 8 week review, I was told by the surgeon that I would not need them for life. It depends on the surgeon I guess.
